Watching Benteleb's debut, my first thought was "this kid deserves some game time this season". Followed by "at who's expense?"

Here is our roster of CMs
Dembele, Paulinho, Sandro, Capoue, Livermore, Carroll, Benteleb, Holtby, Eriksen, Siggy, Falque (http://goo.gl/izzBOs)

And wingers
Lennon, Townsend, Lamela, Chadli

Of those that we keep, some need to be prepared for the understudy/europa/squad/cup role. They each have their fans here, and their own claim for a regular first team berth. So it's gonna be a hard conversation with some of them. Which from that bunch will be happy to "step down"? imho, not many.

So from that lot, are there any that we listen to offers for in January?

Falque and Carroll both not here, one probably on the way back and Livermore I expect to sign for Hull

Also siggy is on his way out imo and same possibly for Lennon which allows Eriksen to play off the left

God we really are over stocked, absolute embarrassment of riches

Probably Falque and Siggy first out the door, although doubtful if we would get an offer for either of them that's reasonable

Livermore may be highly rated by Sherwood/Levy, but I guess it'll be only one of him or Bentaleb to stay. Then you've got another decision to make with Carroll, if he comes back into the fold we've got one extra again

Agreed with all of this. Siggy I think should go, as he would do very well at a plethora of other clubs. He's just too very much in limbo between the winger and central positions, and doesn't offer anything in particular at either position IMO. However, he could do well at another club and comes saddled with the additional bonus of being a homegrown.

How has Falque done in La Liga this season?

Bentaleb and Livermore are very much a like for like. Even have the same hairstyle. Hate that Livermore would likely be the man out due to being much older, as he's English and a Spurs man. However, Bentaleb did well in a high pressure situation and will also fulfill the homegrown quota.

Sigurdsson played 180 minutes of football under sherwood this week and was completely anonymous. Might as well have had 10 men.

He's only good enough for the cups at best.
I think it would be suicide to let Lennon go. He was one of our best players since the City game. Why was he not even on the bench yesterday?
I'd let Naughton go.
Livermoore.
I'll give Holtby another season.

Rubbish, total rubbish.

At least give a reason?
Is it because I dared to challenge the notion that Holtby is any good?
I can't see that anything else I said is even close to being controversial enough to prompt that response?

No, I don't really think Holtby is very good.

I disagree that Sigurdsson is anonymous. My reasoning is in another thread.

I was at the lane Wednesday. He added little to nothing.
Yesterday he passed backwards way more often than forwards.
Sometimes he looks decent but I'm struggling to remember the last time.

I could say the same about Eriksen at the moment. Just hoping with a the chains off he might pick up and go for it.

Sigurdsson is a great player to have around the squad. Homegrown, runs his heart out and has unbelievable technical skills. The system isn't quite getting the best out of him, I'll admit, but I think there may be life in him playing more centrally again and doing the whole Frank-Lampard-esque runs from deep into the penalty spot. Wouldn't ship him out.

Sell Naughton and Dawson.

Invoke buy back clause on Caulker.

You know what, who made the fucking decision to sell Caulker instead of Dawson?! Fucking hell

Sigurdsson and Livermore have to go. I'm not a big fan of Holtby but he hardly cost much and is a decent squad player.

We do have too many midfielders, but we also have lots of games to play and lots of injuries to contend with.

It gives us options. I wouldn't class Siggurdsson as a CM, but as an AM competing with Eriksen and Holtby. However with Tim Sherwood's use of 442, it does give us the option of playing:

when we want to stay narrow and compact:

when we want to go wide and offensive with pace:

Or when we are playing against possession based teams that pack the midfield:

I enjoyed that. Swap in Siggy / Capoue / Bentaleb etc as needed to cover.

Problem with that is that value drops if a plyer isnt playing regularly.
Exactly

this was kinda my question. If we keep everybody, then there are a handful of players who (barring injury) won't get a game. They've all had a taste of the first team, so won't be happy waiting in the wings.

imho we need to move some on for financial reasons, and to make some room for the youngsters to step up to the understudy role.

holtby is a much superior midfielder in my opinion. the only thing Sigurdsson has is a sweet shot technique

I've been saying it for a while. Too many midfielders.

Dembele, Paulinho, Sandro, Capoue, Livermore, Carroll, Benteleb, Holtby, Eriksen, Siggy, Mason,

That's 11 players for 3 positions. We should probably sell 4 of them.......

Selling Livermore might seem rational, but not till the end of the season.

He's doing alright at Hull; if he wants to go then, fine but the same happened to Rose last year, he said he wanted to stay at Sunderland but came back and has been an asset.
