Like Spurs, England have been short of creativity from midfield. Unlike Spurs however, Southgate had a player of James Madissson's calibre and vision on the bench. What was the point of taking him to the World Cup if he was not going to get any minutes on the pitch?

Because Southgate plays his favourites. Sterling spent 5 days in London, arrived back the day before the game and comes on before Grealish.

How Mount gets on instead of Maddison when we're needing a goal is baffling but as I said Southgate plays favourites.

He's a safety first, pragmatic coach who shows favouritism and can't set his teams up to beat top class opposition.

Maddison was injured for most of the tournament and had only just got fit. Hardly a surprise Southgate didn't throw him on in a WC quarter final.

I have long been a very vocal critic of Mason Mount and Southgate's tactics but there is little doubt in my mind that the USA game apart, this has been Southgate's best and bravest tournament so far where he didn't revert to safe and Conservative mode.

As for Mount, in the short time he was on, whilst he frequently breaks down promising attacking moves in many games past, he had a very instant and positive impact on the game in winning us that second penalty after being brought in 5 minutes earlier. So to that extent I think Southgate has got most big calls right in this tournament. For this reason he should be given a crack at the Euros because I have seen a marked difference from his approaches in this tournament and the last two despite us getting further in those last two tournaments.

Yeah I agree.

I've not been a big fan of Mount for England, but in this game I think it made sense as a sub. When we took off Henderson we needed to bring on someone who could lead the press, cover space and do the dirty work that Henderson had been doing. While it might sound fun to bring on Maddison as he's creative and exciting, in that moment we needed someone who would do the work off the ball against a team like France, and that's not really Maddison's game.

And as you say, he won the pen as a result.

Mount won the penalty that we would have equalised with. Sterling was our best player in our run to the Euro’s final and frequently turns up in big games. Maddison hasn’t played for England for years and is recovering from injuries. It’s not favouritism, it’s sense.

Whilst all of that is true.

Sometimes an unknown (Maddison) can really turn a game

Last time I checked we lost all the big games. Remind me of the ones that Sterling (and Mount for that matter) turned up in again?!

With regards Mount that ball was going over his head. It was the idiocy of Hernandez that won us the penalty. Remind me what else he did during his albeit brief time on the pitch? I do remember him wastefully blazing a 35 yarder over the bar with 2 minutes to go.

Have we really come to such mediocrity as a footballing nation that I need to justify why Maddison and Grealish should play over Sterling and Mount!?

I mean Sterling spent 5 days in London and was supposed to have an effect less than 24 hours after getting back. Absolutely woeful sub while Grealish comes on for 90 seconds.

And this ultimately is the problem with Southgate. Not adventurous, can't think outside the box, plays it safe and imo will never win us a trophy.

Mason Mount and Raheem Sterling have been key parts of sides that have won major competitions at club level, and Sterling was superb during the Euro’s. There’s a reason Guardiola and Tuchel, two of the best managers around, love them both.
