I’m not saying we shouldn’t I’m saying there is a balanced view here. As what we probably feel we can get from Maddison is an instant impact. You don’t get the same level of confidence without them being tried and tested in the league and that may play a part.

We need to start well to have any chance next season
True and also the possibility that Winks could go the other way.

Fabian Ruiz been suggested as herc’s mystery player.

stats aren’t quite as good as Maddison however he looks a decent player. Watching his comp seems a bit slow but has a good shot on him. Quite Eriksen-like in his distribution.

Above all he has a welcome to Arsenal video so it’s definitely him ?

I agree, it’s nice to have a player that will hit the ground running. I have trust in Conte and Paratici to identify and choose players that will.
Ruiz, Maddison or any player of that type and quality will finish us off nicely and make us fully ready for the season to come.
I do think any negotiation with Maddison will be a drawn out and expensive one though, as they aren’t going to want to lose one of their best players easy and cheaply.

I don’t want Canohaglu at all and I want Maddison over Ruiz definitely.

When someone says that “most of us would be happy with the player”, it makes me uneasy because we are going off what, someone else’s opinion of a player…and I see plenty of positive opinions on here about players I just don’t want us to sign at all.

Even if it is drawn out and happens on the last day I would be more than happy as I think long term he'd be a brilliant player for us, plus the fact you'd hope his settling in time would be short.

We have done some amazing business so far that if we need to wait for the right player we have that luxury in a position like this- as long as it doesn't stop out-goings from midfield happening before then.

Errrr are we sure Ruiz and Maddison aren’t actually the same player? o_O

PL proven players are often overlooked in favour of talented players from other leagues because of a perception of a “higher ceiling”.

Unless we’re signing a world class player it’s not a view I subscribe to. Who’s to say the already proven player doesn’t have a higher ceiling themselves?

I’m not suggesting we don’t sign players from other leagues ( Kulu being a prime example), but being tried and tested in the PL is under valued.

Maddison also strikes me as the kind of player who will raise his level with better players around him.

Maddison over Ruiz and Çalhanoğlu easily. More prem experience the better, unless we have a crazy good alternative like Chiesa, Pedri etc then I think Maddison is by far the most sensible transfer, a player posting great numbers in the prem and ready to go.

Completely agree. If there is any chance it’s doable we have to get him. I even have worries about SMS in the prem, he’s not that mobile

Chiesa is just coming back from a nasty acl tear and has just officially signed for juve after a 2 year loan. Another corrupt deal

Potential and high ceiling are phrases that always worry me.

We have spent an awful lot of money on players in the last few years with that sort of idea.

This summer we are not messing about every one of our signings are good enough now. Maddison follows this trend.

He ticks every box, why would we go for anyone else when it seems he is the perfect candidate for us?

Ok big list time

He is a cracking player
He has end product
Different type of player to what we have
Can play in multiple positions
PL proven
Young
Wants to come
Excellent set piece taker
Homegrown
Gettable
No competition for his signature (maybe)

As long as we can negotiate a reasonable price this seems like a no brainer.

Lo Celso and Ndombele where players doing very well in other leagues and in the case of Lo Celso will do well again in another league.

There is always risk importing from other leagues which is fine but if you have less risk which Maddison clearly is then it makes more sense unless you have the option of a world class Pedri type player where the potential upside is too good to turn down.

Great post mate, but I think they’d be a long list of teams that would want him if he became available. 18 goals and 12 assists type form will always be in high demands.

we are in the CL so you have to look at other CL teams

City you would assume have other priorities given their depth in that role.

Liverpool maybe but they get on well without a Maddison type player

Chelsea is the wild card in all of this although there was reports they didn’t compete with us on the Richarlison signing due to the size of the fee when they tried to hijack the deal late so without Abramovich they may not be able to gazump us particularly if this is a 60-70m deal.

It's really hard to think who else is out there currently in Maddisons position that will be better than him based on current form.

There's maybe a handful of players who are better than him in style, but not in terms of stats. Maddison should definitely be the one we go for, unless he's a smokescreen for someone truly elite. But even then I can't really think of anyone outside the Prem who would be better than Maddison in terms of what he can offer us.

Paqueta being the only other one who sounds like he can cover midfield and forward.

The only other players I can think of who can cover mid and forward roles play for City. Guys like Gundogan or Bernardo, but don't think those will be happening.
