Don't know about that. What I do know is Grealish's people were given excuse after excuse as to why it was taking time.

Like I said I have to question just how much we really wanted him, considering how easy and close this was to push over the line.
I can’t imagine this has gone down well with Grealish himself, we don’t want to be a club that messes players about, however, for all I know this could be common practice between a lot of club & not just Spurs.

Nor will it likely have gone down well with his agents, who until now have had good relations with Spurs.

It's nothing new mate happens a lot. Difference is with other deals involving other clubs you just hear it's off without the details.

Very true, the last few years we have heard reports of agreeing fee’s with players but then ‘appear’ to fuck them about...Aubemyang(sp), Zaha last year & now Grealish!

Yeah imagined it could’ve been the norm...seems like it can be a cut throat business at times.

Seeing as he's the 'back up', I guess we'll sign the top target in the coming days, right? Of course not. I expect nothing at this point.

Prove me wrong Levy.

Yeah but we're hearing from what I consider decent intel that a deal could’ve been done but WE kept putting it off, just giving opinions however speculative you might think they are.

If we have strung this out all summer and could have got it over the line many times, and the indication as to why we didn't was because he wasn't our first option. Then if it is finally dead in the water now because of us, we must be confident on another target, else we surely would have kept stringing it along till deadline day. Either that or villa or Grealish have got fed up and pulled the plug

So we're stringing backup options along in the hope we get lucky with some more ambitious signings. Guess it's a case of 'be careful what you wish for'. I wanted us to aim high but there should have been a cut off point.

No wonder JJ said he feels for Grealish.

Guess we just need to hope for good luck. VDV style where things just fall into place. There's normally something random that causes these things to go tits up for us (even when it's not the chairman pissing people off).

Currently I think we are turning down solid 7-8/10s in the hope of lucking out with 10/10 late on. I don't fancy our odds.

Honestly we fucking deserve this low for trying to squeeze every ounce of blood out of villa when they were begging for a transplant themselves. Was pathetic and we got what we deserve.

You are making him Shylock.

Few thoughts:

- Most likely, the whole deal was an opportunistic one that presented itself after Villa's failure in their quest for promotion. Villa's subsequent financial woe then made it a deal that might have been concluded under what may be considered market rate. This was what I suspect was attractive to Levy and Pochettino - a chance to sign a talented player at an attractive, cut-price fee. A 'no-brainer', one may say.
- Whilst the deal was looking good - player keen and Villa resigned to losing their best player just to balance the books, a life-line was handed to them in the form of the takeover. As soon as this happened, any deal at the price we were willing to sanction was in off the table. It isn't hard to imagine that an emboldened Villa suddenly made the transfer unattractive. Furthermore, for the new ownership to agree for their jewel in the crown to leave for anything other than silly money would not have won them many favors in the eyes of the Villa faithful.
- The crux of it, perhaps crudely put was that from our side, Levy and Poch probably looked at the matter as objectively as possible and could not justify spending over the odds for a player that may not be better than what we have in the youth ranks already. For example, they may have compared Grealish to say, Amos or Skipp and asked whether the Villa man was, say, worth 35m more than either of them.

I appreciate the frustration but a smart piece of business clearly became much more of a financial risk and therefore dead. Grealish is a really talented player and I hope he gets to fulfill his potential in due course. As for us, it is a shame as we invested a tremendous amount of energy into the deal - that said, this is one that was rather publically played out and lots of other business is undertaken in parallel without as much attention.

I don't disagree with your logic. It's probably very close to the truth. However, we still badly need to sign a CM. So...Let's hope we sign one who ideally was our primary target and not some joke no hoper from Europe.

Well you’re more informed than I on what’s gone on, but I can’t help but think in the back of my mind it’s Levy thinking he holds all the aces in the game and trying to use it for his ( and our advantage).

Although having said that, I would be amazed if the impending sale of Villa to the new owners came completely out of the blue and we weren’t aware of it somehow.

It’s impossibly to judge the Grealish failure as we don’t have all the facts. But what’s clear is that the overall handling of this transfer window has been very poor. The promise was we will do the business early and that hasn’t happened in part because the transfer deadline was brought forward in a World Cup year. And who supported that change? Spurs.

The team needs improvements and is not getting it. That affects competition for places. I’m just even more blown away by the fact we’re entering our ur new stadium with this situation.

I feel we’ve been either badly managed or fed a lie and the stadium has sapped funds completely.
