Living leg end.

His performances this season are part of the reason we finished where we did.

His save from Van Persie.... fook me sideways.

And his passion and celebrations when we score simply cement the fact he is a team member. A true yid :)

Fantastic goalie, who is capable of some incredible saves

! One of which was a Steed Malbranque effort when we were playing PSV, As soon as Steed struck it I jumped up thinking we'd scored... Alas Gomes fingertips were once again to the rescue.

Never doubted him for a second. Not even after THAT Fulham game last year.

different class

i campaigned long and hard for his transfer - i said all along robbo out gomes in - what a keeper

I can remember this.

There were posters everywhere, badges, t-shirts and baseball caps were produced, letters were written to Levy, petitions and all sorts of other stuff....... hell, DC even marched up and down WHL wearing a sandwich board saying 'sign Gomes' on one side and 'what a keeper' on the other. It's even rumoured that on one occasion, Levy went to take a tom-tit and when he lifted the toilet seat, DC's head popped out and he said 'sign Gomes' before disappearing again.

He simply didn't rest until the ink was dry on the contract.......

It went down in the history of fans campaigns as one of the longest and hardest of all time.

It's a crying shame that DC's 'sign Beckford' campaign which ran concurrently with his 'we won't get CL because we failed to sign a pacy/powerful striker' effort won't get the same recognition..........

he's like the pound you find down the back of the sofa that means you have enough money for a large pizza. And even better if you go and pick it up you can have two!

Legend!

on a more serious note, He is an outstanding keeper, who has improved, and i think will improve more, decision making on crosses etc.

Im interested to know, as an older spurs fan, I wish he would collect more rather than punch so often.....Do the younger supporters feel the same,or is this me harking for the old style keeper?

I myself (21) actually prefer a keeper who is clued up enough to punch at times. It's simply not playing the percentages to try and catch more often than not. Gomes is actually very good at making the cross his own and punching with good distance - off the top of my head I can't remember a goal against that came from a poor punch.

Both posts are fair to be honest.

From a teams perspective, it is better if the keeper can come and catch a ball, as it stops the momentum of attack and puts us in a position to get on the ball.

However, a keeper has to make the decision at the time, either come and get rid of the ball, or make the catch. If there are bodies in the way, then the safest approach would be to punch, and usually these days, more so than older days, the way football is played is more direct to get the keeper to make the mistake.

Weird when you think about keeping, because back in the day, gloves were shit, no grip, nothing, these days, the ball sticks to the gloves.

But, then we look at the balls being used - olden day balls were very sturdy during flight, but todays balls wobble all over the shop in the air, making it more difficult to judge a catch at times.

I'm happy with his handling of the ball, sometimes I wonder why people say he isn't good at crosses or handling, because in my eyes, he is one of the best around with his handling.

I think at the beginning of his spurs career, he was often guilty of coming for literally everything, but he has slowed down a fair bit, and lets be honest, when he first came, no-one trusted our defense to clear the ball on his behalf.

Gomes, can handle the ball, very very well, technically well, his position sense is supurb too.
Shot stopping, unbelievable.

I'd probably say his biggest weakness can be his distribution sometimes, thats not even a huge weakness though, but, then we were spoilt with Robbo being absolutely fantastic with his distribution.

Gomes should throw way more often :-D

Yep his only two weaknesses these days is kicking, and the fact that he is a little bit of a pussy when it comes to knocks.

Taking a knock isn't necessarily a weakness though, the impact the body takes from being in goal is heavy and can hurt.
Being tackled by a forward is most of hte time worse than any other tackle on the pitch as well, as you are usually taking a boot to the upper body, or hands.

It simply isn't possible to catch crosses on a regular basis with the balls as they are now. You could try but you would drop more than you claim.

Just ask Fabianski.

Great post. I think it is partly down to the memories of those early days when, as you say, he did go for everything when sometimes he should have stayed put. I think it is mostly because he goes for more crosses than most GKs and nobody is going to deal with everything 100% correctly so people will remember those he doesn't. It never ceases to amaze me the number of times he punches the ball a distance which would be considered a great clearing header, but the commentator says he just got a fist to it or that was unconvincing. It is much easier to not put yourself in that position and risk the blame if you get it wrong. I think he is actually a very brave keeper despite the fact that he can be a real drama queen at times. I am very glad we have got him.
