Your Point 4 is what in my opinion will put him ahead of Carrick. When I first joint SC or another site, one point of disagreement between myself and many other posters was that Carrick " telegraphed " (I used exactly the same word) his intended passes because of his big back swing. Of course he also has much better accelration than Carrick had.
They are completely different kind of players, but if Winks becomes anywhere as good as Carrick then my god we would have a player.

Yep, Carrick is a defensive midfielder who's game involved sitting in front of back four and intercepting and then using his passing ability from deep.

Winks is more of an all action box to box midfielder, maybe he will become a defensive midfielder in the future but at the moment he's far more attacking and would be suited as a partner to Carrick, not as competition for the same position.

Well yes thugh maybe not so much about interceptions. Carrick's main role is recycle the ball, to take the ball under pressure and pass it on, creating space for attacks to start from deep. Also good positioning to cut attacks, cover players and black moves. He's a deep lying play maker if you like, the fact he is also very able to intercept the ball is a bonus but I don't think it is what his play is about really.

TBH I wasnt comparing the ability of the two players

I was highlighting that they dont share the same positive characteristics,

I was talking about winks in general, his range of passing isn't great, his dribbling isn't one of his strengths whilst it is for modric it is.

Winks has a good shot on him for a CM in a general

For example, I have seen Onomah has an ability to pick out a good long through ball, is a good dribbler and has a weak shot yet isn't like modric either.

Wait, what? Please tell me this should have /s behind it (/s = sarcasm for those not ITK). Did you not watch our last game? His range of passing is exemplary, his dribbling ability is worldy, and his game resembles Modric more than anyone we have had since Modric. Can he reach that ability? I think so. The kid to me should be starting ahead of Dembele.

Not sure I'd start him ahead of Dembele, but I'm certainly not worried when he's on the field. Bentelab, Mason, and Carroll always looked like they had a huge mistake in them.

I always thought Bentaleb was flawless when he played, until he became too adventurous and made costly mistakes. Hope Winks learna and doesnt repeat what Benraleb did.

Oh yeah, it's Bentaleb, not Bentelab as I spelt it.

Meh, once they leave they're dead to me...including grammatical accuracy.

I think beats would have meant his vision and creativity. I think his initially comparison was with Carroll at youth level. Winks like most players can spread play and has an excellent weight of pass, but he hasn't shown the ability to pull out unpredictable passes and split defenses yet. Though I don't remember Modric doing that much either so not a criticism just not a normal part of his game. You can't do everything and it may be something he develops with age.

I do however agree about his dribbling. It's not typically impressive, but it is very underrated and can do enough to beat a man or two if they get too tight with him

He has some of Modric's abilities, great vision, can see space and turn into it when he has the ball, has a turn of pace and speed of thought that can get him past opponents, has quick feet, great eye for a pass, which hasn't developed yet to Modric passing range levels. Give him time, we'll see. His dribbling ability isn't "worldy" imo. Great talent we have though.

Christ, I thought the English press were bad, I've seen comparisons to Xavi, Modric and Carrick in the last few pages alone. He's clearly got ability and potential but let's just hang fire till the guys actually played more than a handful of games. Build them up to knock them down and all that.

I think most people are trying to compare his style to those players you've mentioned - not to state he is at their level.

This.

I have no idea why some people, not just here, but the media and social media find this so had to understand. It's purely a stylistic comparison, not an ability comparison.

Really excited about how great he is. The fact that Poch trusts him in those situations says a huge amount. He came on and calmed us down when we were looking a bit rattled and did more than that by also driving us forwards at times.

I'd love him to start. Not sure instead of who though!
