Really though…. Kane It’s hard to argue not in the top two. His stats are clear. Only Greaves beats Him….. I never had the chance to view Hoddle and I was in love with Ginola, and Berba, but Kane is in the top 3 for sure. Leaving now or not he will still be there
He's definitely one of our best ever goal scorers, and his stats are clear but then everyone's best ever player would be a striker. Picking your best player is much more subjective.

I think perhaps the more simplistic narrative is looking at netspend as the determining factor of whether a club is trying or not and what really should be considered is looking at when a club is willing to spend money. Do they spend when thing's are heading towards falling apart or do they spend when there's an opportunity to build upon what they had previously done. For example what Arsenal have done.

The other consideration regarding net spend is relative distance in relation to your rivals, so if your rivals are performing at a level way beyond what you are, you're going to have spend significantly more to catch up. Hence why Man City, the team who are top right now and Liverpool are not in the top 3 of the arbitrary choosing or 2019. It's no good keeping on par with your rivals on net spend when they're 20/30 points ahead of you in the table.

If you think that concerns about not spending are simplistic in relation to finishing 8th, selling your best player and simply using that revenue to try and catch up when your rivals such as Arsenal spend 200 million after finishing 24 points above you without selling their star players, then that's fine by me, happy to be considered simple minded.

The level of hope we're placing on Ange and his more attacking style is enormous in the context.

The choosing of 2019 is not arbitrary because it the first full season in our new stadium among other things.

But I do broadly agree with what you are saying. I wasn’t suggesting you were simple minded at all, apologies if it read that way. I just wanted to point out the net spend for balance because I do think when emotions are running high here the debate can lose nuance- not saying your post did, it was just a general observation.

In the last 5 years we have outspent liverpool in terms of net spend.
Is that possibly because we've spent so much on dross that we've been unable to sell?
It's not all about net spend, although many seem to think that's the bottom line.

I think net spend is an indicator of a lot of the poor choices we have made, so it’s important.

Not just that - we don’t get rid of our deadwood for large sums, either.

I'm just sensitive, don't feel bad haha, yeah I just don't want what I'm saying to end up being a conversation on chucking money at the problem, it's just feeling like they're showing their hand with this move, that we'll only do what is seen to be competing without competing and hoping we land on a manager who can drag us kicking and screaming and I just don't want us to be treated like fools anymore.

If a player no longer wants to be here – no matter how good, then they can leave with my blessing. Like all of you, I love Kane, but we should now move on. As has been pointed out numerous times, we've lost quality before and bounced back. We've lost players IMO that are better than Kane. Hoddle, similar situation to Kane, first debut 12 years prior to leaving and both age 30. Hoddle for me was a better, more naturally gifted footballer, some of the stuff he could do with a ball was disgusting!

But we will be just fine. IF we invest the money we get for him into the two CB's we're after, then straight away, I think we are a much stronger side. We have enough talent in our first 11 to share Kane's goals between them. The main way we will be better is not conceding so many bloody goals! COYS!

Happiest I'll ever be to see Kane go:

- got way more time with him than I'd expect for a player of his quality
- cash in £80m+ rather than free in a year (I know we shouldn't need to but the point stands)
- happiest any manager has been for him to leave, ange seems to like richy upfront
- probably the lowest point we've been so losing him won't mean dropping the ball on CL qualification, I fear were too far behind already even with him in the team and don't see him making a huge difference for this manager
- going abroad, this is a big plus. Losing him on a free to an English club would be so much worse. He may also come back to Spurs at the end of his career to break the league record

I never said we have spent well. I think we are now seeing a byproduct of such poor spending. A bloated squad, that needs trimming, but not enough interest in our deadwood.

I think you worded it badly, I get your point. If he's gonna go these are better circumstances than on a free to Chelsea or arsenal.

net spend you say? Ha. Convenient to start framing the very year after we spent absolutely fck all.

Pointing to the numbers from 2019 only serves to highlight how badly the money has been spent, and how little has been recouped from sales. Focus on perceived deal value, not need- and an incoherent strategy overall.

Last summer ultimately cost us Conte and the need to start over with a squad ill-matched to the new manager's MO.

A weak finish to this summer, Kane going, and a couple of unproven signings with the money, could well cost us Ange.

This Club is trapped in Levy's doom loop

While I have no doubt it eventually gets done, I could see today being the day Daniel plays hard ball and the meeting doesn’t go as expected for Bayern. It’s not in his nature to not get his pound of flesh. Fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly, Daniel gotta negotiate hard.

They have paid more than double we have on agent fees.
