If they try to push him in a direction he doesn’t prefer, he can simply decline and take the more profitable route in 12 months time going direct to his preference, with an even bigger signing bonus to boot as that club will be able to pass-on the savings from not forking out a transfer fee.

I think if he is still contractually bound then it’s easier for a solution good for all parties to occur. But yes we can’t play hardball and I think neither would him.
