'I've seen you go down the middle' - Tottenham's Kane reveals what Hart said before he stuck penalty down the middle

Tottenham striker Harry Kane has revealed what Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart said to him prior to his penalty this afternoon.

The scores at the Etihad were level at 0-0 when Raheem Sterling was adjudged to have handled Danny Rose's cross by referee Martin Atkinson and the spot kick responsibility fell to Kane.

The 22-year-old took aim from 12 yards, but not before exchanging a few words with his England teammate Hart, who attempted to ruffle Kane's feathers.

Hart's efforts proved to be futile as Kane maintained his composure and fired his strike down the middle of the goal, which is where the goalkeeper had predicted the forward would place his effort.

"Obviously we take a few penalties when we're away with England," he told BBC Sport.

"He said he's seen me take a couple and seen me go down the middle as well so it was a bit of mind games but I knew where I was going to put it and was thankful to see it go in."

Although Kane won the physiological battle his effort did not prove to be decisive as City substitute Kelechi Iheanacho equalised for the hosts.

City turned the screw late on but it was Spurs who grabbed a late winner when Christian Eriksen reached Erik Lamela's through ball first and finished with aplomb.

Mauricio Pochettino's side climbed to second place by virtue of their 2-1 victory but Kane refused to be drawn on Tottenham's title chances.

How many goals has Kane scored from open play recently? Genuinely interested as I know he's scored alot of penalties.

You are all wrong.

The answer is really simply and staring you all in the face, you are just having a hard time accepting it.

Harry Kane is not as good as you think he is. He will never again score 20 goals in an EPL season, we should have taken £50M (if offered) in the summer.

There I said it.
I cant wait to bring this up again when he scores 20 epl goals.
That's 16 now, Jules. Reckon he can score 4 more in 12 games? Because i reckon he will.

Eidur Gudjohnsen says he ‘wasn’t sure’ about Harry Kane during their spell together at Tottenham and admits the England international has proved him wrong.

Gudjohnsen, hoping to be a part of the Iceland squad at Euro 2016 this summer at the age of 37, spent a loan spell at White Hart Lane back in 2010 from Monaco. At that stage Kane was a young striker scoring goals for their Under-18s and he joined Gudjohnsen on the first-team bench for an FA Cup win over Bolton in February 2010, just the second time Kane was named in a Spurs matchday squad. At that stage the Englishman was primarily lining up for Tottenham’s youth sides and occasionally training with the senior squad and it would be another three years before he made his Premier League bow. And he has not looked back since, with 40 league goals in the 70 games since that point and three goals for his country in eight appearances. Speaking to FourFourTwo magazine Gudjohnsen said he would not have written off the, then teenage, striker if he’d have known the mindset Kane possesses. “Harry Kane has turned out to be much better than I thought,” he explained. “That just shows that you can’t call players right all the time. If you don’t know them personally, you don’t know what their attitude is like. “Sometimes in training, as he occasionally trained with the first-team squad, thought: “I’m not sure about him”. “I didn’t know him as a person. If I did, I probably would have held a different opinion.”

You can't tell a book by looking at the cover either Eider.
People develop at different rates both physically and mentally. So it's not always apparent how they will turn out.
Probably why we keep some youngsters into their early 20s yet let others leave during their teens.

Best thing about this thread is reading back on the 1st lot of pages (2011) and seeing peoples reactions to a very young 18 year old Kane. My best pick of the bunch...

Obika should get his chance before Kane I hope.

I'd hope not. Having seen him for Yeovil, I'd be amazed if he makes it anywhere above mid Championship level. If he gets a chance in our first team then we've seriously ballsed up our striker recruitment. He looks a decent, hard-working big lad, but nowhere near good enough for us and I'm surprised he hasn't been let go yet to be honest.

To be fair to Eidur, pretty much every report i've read from coaches and people that worked with Kane during his development have said he didn't have any standout qualities that made him a certainty to make it with us. I think he is just one of these players like say, Lampard, that aren't blessed with a lot of natural ability but their work ethic is such that no part of their game is weak. It's this work ethic that will allow him to hopefully have a long successful career with us.

Great goal last night and looked very good when he came on. Sheringhamesque is a decent description, not going to pin it to him just yet though as Sheringham is the most intelligent English footballer of the past 2 decades (well, him and Le Tissier). I think the boy has a future with us, he could well become a genuine competition to Soldado/ a different type of option to Soldado if he pushed on from this as last night he showed three great finishes with his three shots, great awareness and a lot of fight too when others were flagging. He also has a touch more pace than I'd every previously accredited to him.

I remember seeing a video of him, long before Harry started involving him on EL benches, absolutely demolishing the Utd youth team when he was just a nipper and I made the Sheringham comparison from that, last night and v Cardiff he really showed that he's beginning to apply that to the speed and power of top level football. Would be great if he and Andros become regulars for us over the next few years and after our youth system being a baron wasteland for so long, we suddenly produce two absolute gems.

The most encouraging thing about Kane is that he is improving all the time as he gains experience. Last night was his best performance for us and, even if they are the worst side in the league, against the best side he's had a start against.

More pro's than cons as far as I'm concerned.

He's good in the air, has good ball control, is creative (did anybody notice the beautiful slide through pass to Lennon to assist one of our goals v WBA?), knows when to drop off and when to make a run, has a thunderous long shot (remember his goal in the Carling Cup this season?), can beat a man with the ball at his feet and hold onto it under pressure. He also works bloody hard. He is 20, so is only going to improve, how much is up to him really. His movement means that as long as crosses come in, he will always have chances, so if he becomes better from close up he is capable of being at least a good goalscorer if not a great one, and he's shown that he is able to make chances for himself too.

What holds him back is his lack of pace, but that can be compensated for if the rest of his game is up to scratch. Much depends on where he ends up, right now it's not overly clear whether he should lead the line or play off a main striker. I would suggest that he'll end up playing as a main striker and will be best served with quicker, more nimble players around him. So far, in his fledgeling days, he is doing well in a side that has little direction or style. I would love to see him in a well drilled side with three creative types behind him (Eriksen, Lamela and A.n.other). Players, especially young ones, improve by playing with high quality players. It would also be interesting to see him as one of those three behind the forward with Soldado leading the line but I'd be slightly worried that having both of Kane and Soldado in a front four would lack pace, it would need to be a very in tune and well coached attack. He has much less experience, and is a couple of years younger, than Danny Wellbeck for instance, who last season in his second season as a semi-regular for the evenutual runaway Champions scored just one league goal.

Kane is improving every time he plays, he's looking more confident and if he finishes the season strongly with another 2/3 goals then whoever is hired in the summer will have no choice but to consider him ahead of the new season, while we may well be saved having to find a new striker in the summer too (as Adebayor, Soldado and Kane (if he takes this chance) would read very well as striker options considering they'll be fighting for one place). Especially as a homegrown boy (god forbid we have a player with whom we can develop an affinity), he has time on his side and I for one am willing to be patient and see if he can build on a promising start an improve to the level needed. He has the tools, the right attitude and management and he may well be able to use them.

He has his chance now. Soldado is injured, Adebayor is off form, we have a favourable run of fixtures. He'll probably never get a better chance than this to show his worth, or at least not for a long time, so it's up to him to take it. I'm pretty confident that he will.

I'm so clever :D

Uhm, he's talking about Obika and how he shouldn't get his chance before Kane... I think he nailed it.

I've been quietly impressed by Kane ever since he started getting game time for the first-team. No he doesn't have much pace, but that really isn't as much of an issue as some seem to think it is for a player like him.

He needs to work on his composure, but I've noticed some very nimble footwork on occasions, and some excellent positional sense. He's also got a range of finishing that reminds me a little bit of Shearer (and no...I don't think he's a Shearer-type striker at all). I remember him scoring a stunning goal for Millwall from about 25-30 yards out.

As far as I'm concerned, he's got the sort of core skills that will only improve with age as long as he's nurtured and given opportunities. Stick him in a championship team for the next 5 years and it will look like he never had the skills to make it. But put him in a team surrounded by players of the quality of, say, Eriksen, and I honestly think he'll shine.

I'm sure this will sound odd to some, but seeing Kane given a proper chance would significantly boost my enthusiasm for our club, at a point where I've been beginning to lose all faith. There are plenty of things I dislike about Sherwood (and lord knows I don't want him being our manager next season), but his confidence in Bentaleb (if misguided), and his willingness to play Kane, have to be admired.

It's difficult to explain, but I get the same feeling about Kane as I did when Barmby first broke into the team. He just seems like a player that has something unpredictable about him..a quickness of thought that makes up for any lack of pace. I desperately need something to make me feel proud about being a Spurs fan right now, and developing a young English striker would definitely do the trick.

Woo hoo! I finally got a prediction right!
