Harry Interview in The Standard

For me these were the most important parts. reading between the lines, it sounds like only a CM in January, and Sandro may not be as hot as we thought unless he is doing some serious leg work on "getting to know him"

Also looks like Bale and Gomes he likes and are going nowhere, and Pav could well be on his way out come January! But will he replace him.....that would have been my question!

So while he traded last January and over the summer, he is not planning to do much business during this January's transfer window. "I am happy with the squad.
The only area we are short of a body is central midfield. I have got Wilson, Tom [Huddlestone] and JJ [Jermaine Jenas]: only three central midfield players but that is not enough."
More so, as Jenas is on four bookings, Wilson Palacios on three and Jamie O'Hara is away on loan at Portsmouth.
Tony Parks, a former Tottenham player Redknapp brought in to replace the Austrian goalkeeping coach he inherited, has so transformed Heurelho Gomes that Redknapp rules out going back to Portsmouth for the England No1 David James, insisting:"I am very pleased with Gomes."
He also insists Gareth Bale is going nowhere. The player most likely to leave is Roman Pavlyuchenko, who has struggled this season. "If he does not get into the team on a regular basis, which is hard for him at the moment, then there is every chance he will want to move in January", says Redknapp.
When I suggest Tottenham bought the wrong Russian, given the impact Andrey Arshavin has made at Arsenal, Redknapp laughs. "I could not say that", he says, then expresses his admiration for the Gunner. "Arshavin looks a good player, a real danger."
Redknapp admires Sulley Muntari, the former Portsmouth player now at Inter Milan.
But, whatever trading he does in January, Redknapp won't be signing anyone he does not know. He says: "If I was looking for a player from Chelsea, I would speak to young Frank [Lampard] or Joe Cole. If I was looking for somebody from Liverpool, Jamie [Redknapp's son] would speak to Carragher or Gerrard for me."

i like harry, but he does love the old spin

tony parks may have helped Gomes, but Gomes was a top class keeper when he arrived

his spurs career was nearly ruined by jr and harry playing him thru injury (now i'm not blaming harry for getting in sanchez as an inadequate replacement)

and I don't think from the 'spin signals', that HG has had Harry's full support thru his time here

so i really don't want to see harry getting any credit for Gomes - to me it's 90% credit to gomes and 10% to parks (or something of that order)

Whilst I agree DC, I think it is hard to say what was going on behind the scenes. A lot of Gomes' issues last year were down to confidence (which he has openly admitted) and injury. I think Harry was shrewd in bringing in Cudicini to give him a bit of insentive to get things sorted, while also allowing Gomes decent rest to recover.

Gomes has also said that he now is confident and isn't suffering from any or the 'issues' he had last year. Who knows how much that is down to Harry? He has kept faith in Gomes even when he is sure to have had lots of 'footballing people' whispering in his ear.

fair comments IOMLS - my reading of the situation (and I am on the outside looking in, so may be completely wrong) was that Gomes was 'hung out to dry' by JR who failed to get a suitable deputy in for Gomes and so let him play on through injury that nearly finished his career in england

I'm not convinced by my reading of the runes that HG was given wholehearted support by Harry (see all the James' stories and the mixed messages over who was no.1 between HG and CC)

as i say i may be wrong and your more positive interpretation may be the corrrect one

but for me Gomes recovery is almost all down to the strength and talent of the man himself, aided doubtless somewhat by Parks' knowledge of the English game and keeping in general-

however I'm not convinced how much better Gomes is now than he was when he joined us, clearly a lot more au fait with the english game - but that surely would have happened anyway

my basic point remains (and I may be wrong) but i don't see Gomes as a 'Harry success story'

Harry loves the good old spin so much, there should be a job for him in the Labour (shadow) government. All achievements are mainly due to him and his coaches (that he brought to the club). All failures are mainly due to the previous regime and circumstances "outside of our control".

Nobody is claiming that in the slightest, the only thing he says about Gomes is that he is very pleased with him.....

I always wondered Jamie's specific job title at Spurs. And it's not every club that has a 'Tapper-upper'. still, he's shown his skills in that area in the past as we've found to our cost (or rather profit).

Hi SB

here's the relevant quote - stuck in as it is throughout a whole article of Harry 'spin' (and as I say I like Harry)

Tony Parks, a former Tottenham player Redknapp brought in to replace the Austrian goalkeeping coach he inherited, has so transformed Heurelho Gomes that Redknapp rules out going back to Portsmouth for the England No1 David James, insisting:"I am very pleased with Gomes."

to me - as Harry appointed Parks that's giving Harry reflected credit - and as I say I think it's a misrepresentation both of Parks' input and indeed the other signals that seem to me to have emanated from Harry about HG

I may well be wrong - but IMO Gomes' transformation is mainly about HG, a little bit about TP and very little, if at all, at all about Harry, whom I'm far from convinced has been giving HG wholehearted support thru this time

and the latter belief is not just my opinion, it's shared by some/many spurs and non-spurs fans who time and again have thought Harry was going to ditch Gomes - why?

if Harry was backing HG so much where did all the 'HG to go/HG isn't rated' stories come from

was it all just invention by the wicked media - i don't think so

IN FACT - now i think about it, i think Harry actually went public with doubts about Gomes - again might be wrong

I'm just giving my 'spin' to counter what i see as 'Harry spin' in this article

Not really sure I follow DC, so you think Harry is trying to claim credit for Gomes or not?

If you think he is, I cant see it, when the only thing he says is "I am pleased with Gomes"....and after giving him zero public support for the last year it would be a bit stupid if he did wouldn't it?

Hi SB :) - maybe I'm seeing agendas where there aren't

but i think in the context of this article Harry is getting kudos for Gomes, (maybe he isn't angling for it - maybe it's the journo spin) when as you indicate, he's hardly been backing him beforehand has he?

let's see how things pan out - if Harry does start trying to get a slice of the 'gomes pie' as the season progresses

as i say - I may well be wrong here

but the whole article is riddled with spin for me - ok nothing wrong to counter the usual anti-spurs spin -

Rednapp himself shrugged off any credit for Gomes at the end of last season so what's your point? He says 'I am very pleased with Gomes'- how does that count as self-congratulatory spin?
