Decent keeper, big presence and commanding, good distribution-few too many errors but on his day is one of the best in the world. Up there with top6 in the Prem.

Ones to look at would be:
Foster,
Hennesey.

But Gomes is good for now.

I honestly think in any other league Gomes would be the best keeper in the world. The problem is I dont think he reallly fancys the rough stuff of the premier league.

He is young for a GK and I think he will improve. I think the club needs to bring in some serious competition tho to push him. Cudicini and Stipe dont cut it....

he punches to many crosses and alot of them put us back into trouble, he reminds me of the goalkeepers on pro evolution soccer 2011 for whoever has played it.

He has made some god awful errors and they have resulted in silly points dropped.

chelsea home - stopped us winning although redeemed still gave away rash pen.
man utd away
bolton home very close to not winning

there will probably be some more, cudicini also cost us wigan home and newcastle away.

not every goalkeeper does this van der sar does it once a season MAX.

we need shay given

Who would you rather have. James?

You enlighten us with your expertise about how he went down too quick when he actually didn't get down quick enough as the ball went underneath his body. :duh:

Any goal conceded whether it was a mistake or not gets jumped on by the anti-Gomes lobby who seem to ignore the sheer amount of top quality saves he makes every game.

You misunderstand, I meant "Gomes has to go down earlier".It was a play on words, apologies if I wasn't clear.

Actually, I think Gomes is a very good goalkeeper who would be very hard to replace. The issue with him is that he puts pressure on himself with poor performances from time to time and his inability to deal with high balls in to the box invites unwelcome attention in the next game.

Agree...he makes our defenders nervous.

He punches the balls too often...

Is he afraid of pain...?

But sometimes makes so incredible saves...

Most keepers seem to punch these days, rather than catch and Gomes is no worse than any other keeper, although he does seem to have an occasional brainstorm and do some strange things.

Cudicini is a decent back-up too and we're lucky to have both of them but it wouldn't do any harm for us to make it a priority to scout around for an eventual top notch replacement.

Gomes is superb imo though he does have the odd moment of madness, but overall he's top class.

My sincere apologies for misunderstanding. I jumped to the wrong conclusion.

Of all the areas that I would consider Spurs to have a problem, goalie is not one of them.

Gomes has, does, and will continue to make mistakes. But that is true of every goalkeeper. What isn't true of every goalkeeper, but is true about Gomes, is that he has/does/and will continue to pull of some truly spectacular saves and that he is a rock in the goal.

The other thing to bear in mind is that what some would dub 'erraticism' in a goalie is actually a strength. It makes the opposition player uncertain. The defenders play with him time and again in training and on the pitch. They will know what he does and doesn't do. The assertion that the defence don't trust him or are nervous around him is ludicrous.

I agree with everything else you say, but think, in general, that anyone who doesn't get that Cudicini is exceptionally good as cover and we are lucky to have him is way off the mark. It's not like United's cover for VDS (who retires this season) are anything to write home about; the Goons 'Keepers are all pretty porr; Chelsea have Hilario (nuff said - unless they have moved on from that and I missed it:grin:). Only Citeh have better goalkeeping cover IMHO, and he is pretty much determined to leave as he doesn't want to be sitting on the bench. So who do you think would be prepared to sit on the bench for us, and is bett than Cudicini/the cover of our rivals:shrug:

I still just do not get this. Nani divced, which is a free-kick offence. He hamdled the ball, which is a free-kick offence. If he hadn't handled the ball it would have went out for a goal-kick. So, it was either a free-kick, whcih Gomes hadn't yet taken, and so Nani shouldn't have touched the ball (and Clatty shouldn't have been telling Gomes to get the ball back to the right place, in any case). Or it was a goal-kick in which case...you've guessed it...Nani shouldn't have been touching the ball (and Clatty shouldn't have been telling Gomes to get the ball back to the right place, in any case, as well as explaining why he had decided to ignore two yellow card offences that he clearly saw). Or he was playing the advantage (in spite of his later denial), in which case Gomes would have actually had to have played the ball, AND, no advantage accruing, he should have took the play back as is conventionally done. He also 'managed' to ignore the fact that Paul Scholes pushed him, in an act reminiscent of the di Canio incident, because he dared to not give Nani a penalty, and to not punish Ferdinand for literally shouting at the linesman the whole time him and Clatty were consulting.

Honeslty, folk were just way too quick to excuse Clatty and the United players and believe the half-arsed excuses made on their collective behalves, while lobbing all of the blame on the Octopus.

its a fair point, i would just like the club to bring in a GK with some real hunger to be a no.1 somewhere, I think Begovic would have been perfect but obviously he chose stoke. Maybe a younger keeper like Joe Lewis or Westwood. For me Cudicini is a sound back up but Gomes knows when he is fit or even half-fit he will be playing.

Without Di-versing too much, I think that comes down to Redknapp again and how he uses his squad for competition. Remember how Lennon improved his game after Bentley arrived, it was just the push he needed.

well done for naming two of the most error prone goalkeepers in the league (more then games anyway) Foster who has been far from decent for Birmingham, if he was playing for a top club he would have been getting bad reviews. He basically admits it himself.

With Henessey your talking about a goalkeeper who has only just been reinstated as N.1 and has far from cemented that possition. He is an able shotstopper (not gomes level mind), but makes a hell of a lot of errors. He is young and will learn. But isn't close to the level required.

I agree...it is always right to strengthen the squad if possible. I just find it difficult to see where we could improve on Gomes/Cudicini at this precise point in time.

Gomes is very good and the only level of goalkeeper, Neuer or Adler, who would be an improvement would probably be hard for us to sign.
