I agree. People are looking at what Conte's done to Dier and Davies as proof that we're all fine because they've both been solid. What they should be doing is looking at what Conte could potentially do with defenders who have an even better starting point.

If he can turn Dier into a really solid CCB, imagine how good Koulibaly would be under him! If he can turn Davies into a good LCB, imagine what he could do with Gvardiol! It's a lack of ambition and it's exactly the mentality that led to us signing nobody for two windows and stagnating as a result.
Nobody is saying that we shouldn't sign top players though. It might not be possible is all. I mean our top target was Bastoni but he doesn't want to leave and Inter are keen to keep him, we wanted Gvardiol but he signed a deal so he would stay one more season, we want Bremer but he's holding out for Inter. How anyone can call it a lack of ambition is beyond me. We've been very ambitious and signed some quality players this window. It's just that neither of them is a centre back aside from Lenglet and who knows how good Conte can make him. It's not always possible to get the players you want but that's not for lack of ambition. It also doesn't mean we can't succeed with who we have.

I cant for the life of me work out who we are targetting at CB if Bastoni/Bremer dont happen. I was hoping for Koulibaly but he looks to be off to Chelsea. I cant think of another really top CB that is available and surely Lenglet won't be the only CB we get.

Still think we should be doing anything we can to sign De Ligt. He’s on sale at 70M and while salary would be enormous, he’d be a chance to be our VVD. Probably not open to anywhere other than Bayern, but I hope we at least tried.

Would be a waste of everyone's time to even make the phone call.

Romero is our VVD. Romero is better than De Ligt.

This just isn't true, all of Liverpool's other CBs are better than ours.

Konate and Matip are top top class. Gomez would get in our team.

Stones is better than Dier and Davies.

I just feel we are wasting an opportunity to really challenge if we don't secure a top CB. The best we can hope for with Davies and Dier at the back is fighting for third / fourth, it will be our level.
Let's be honest we've got almost no shot to really challenge City & Pool in the league. These are two of the best premier league teams of all time. Conte magic is the only thing that even allows us to have the conversations

And that's the same coach who bossed the league with a back 3 of Cahill, David Luiz & Azpilicueta...

Third place and a cup would be an awesome season.

What do Dier and Davies have to do to show a lot of you that they are good enough. Dier fought his corner to say he wanted to play centre half stuck to his guns came through some stuff periods then Conte comes in and Dier becomes a different player with his covering and organising to the point were when he is not in the team we don't look the same and when the England squad was announced and he wasn't there was a lot of disbelief.
Ben was playing at left back in and out of the team also went through some tough times but all the while was still outstanding for Wales in a back 3. Then Conte comes along puts him in a back 3 and he hasn't looked back.
Some on here need to cut them both some slack and just appreciate how hard they have worked under AC and improved.
I also think if that Joe Rodon if given the chance could have a big part to play as back for Dier under AC.
Just get behind them and remember Conte has said it is not about replacements but having a squad that is very fluid.

Matip bossed a champions league final against us and has been an integral part of a Liverpool side that's won the champions league and multiple domestic trophies.

Stones has also won multiple titles playing nearly 200 games for City.

The bias on here is actually astounding at times - take your Spurs tinted glasses off!

Wow matip bossed a game that the other team didn't bother to turn up for

Take away vvd or laporte and matip and stones are bang average and full of mistakes just like they were before they were surrounded by players that are actually world class

Guarantee Conte isn't thinking this way though. We don't need to play City & Liverpool every week and to be honest we held our own against them when we did play them. Conte is trying to put together a squad that is deeper, has more parts that fits what he wants to do and is fitter and more well drilled than any of us fans can remember. We need to be more consistent and put weaker teams away, that is where we can make up some of the gap. They even brought in a set piece expert to help us grow there too (as City and Liverpool were top in the league in goals from set pieces). Try and win as many games as possible (I think 25 wins is a good target) and then see where it gets us.

I think we are still three players away from a near complete squad and that is another defender, a top quality RWB and another forward. I'd be happy with Gil being that other forward and potential Spence as RWB although he isn't top quality yet.

The other is a central defender. I'm a huge huge fan of Dier but this is about having a squad of quality so we can rotate. Need a centre back and can imagine the club stuck between a rock and a hard place on either investing now for one or waiting for Bastoni be it this summer or next.

This always happens when we start to do better as a team and people become really protective of players. You got to differentiate between players being carried a bit and looking better in a good team to those who mainly get us producing performances. There is more of the former in our defence in particular. There is a bit of space to get better there and it would be nice to do it now while we have the attacking power to compete. It will more than likely end up being the difference at the end of the year like it has multiple seasons over the last decade.

Am not arguing about Dier and Davies who’ve done really well under Conte. The issue is practical, namely injuries, suspensions and the need for rotation because of the increased number of games, what with the Champions League and all. We need another really good centre back and I’m sure Conte will want one brought in for this season. I fully expect us to sign someone.

Not the best take this.

In the 30 games he played the full 90mins, they lost 4 games, and conceded 26 goals.

Very far from a laughing stock, was actually credited with improving their defence in that first season and in the next half season before VVD arrived in Jan, they only lost 2 games when he played.

That was not my point about adding more players, the more quality comes in the better. My point was to appreciate the fact that Dier and Davies have worked really hard under AC and have come on leaps and bounds so give them the credit instead of criticising them for the past and commend them for what they are doing now under Conte.

I agree, and I'm not a massive fan of konate either. In my mind he's got great physicality, but not much else.
Both Liverpool and Man City's defenders look better because the rest of the team work so hard to recover the ball, therefore the defence is far less exposed in most games.

I’m guessing Kim Min Jae.
That said there was a tenuous link in the press to Wout Faes earlier in the summer, he looked a decent prospect. Think he was then linked with Leicester, who have done some decent business last few seasons.

I would argue that our biggest issue last year was in quality depth as seen when Dier went out and the defense was just not good enough. Also, showed in CM when our only option off the bench seemed to be Winks and we could not afford to rotate. Romero (Sanchez as his backup), Dier and Davies were very good as a unit, but there was no real depth behind either Dier or Davies.
