At forty years old, has Brad Friedel done enough in training to usurp Gomes from starting as the regular no1 in League matches?

so far this season, we,ve seen one match for each of our keepers and in the only defeat, as well as the only game in which we conceded, Friedel was between the sticks, yet looked solid on all shot stopping and basic keeper fundamentals.

If "USA" does get the nod, i would think Gomes will knuckle down and work to sharpen up his flaws, rather than look for a move in January.

Because 'Arry's going to alternate all 3 keepers, every game, just to wind them up.

I think it's vital we have proper competition for Gomes, it will help him get back to his best and also allow us to rest/sub him out when he hits a dodgy patch without costing us in quality. I'd expect by the end of the season for Gomes to have played more games than Friedal, but i see Friedal as the 1st choice keeper right now (just).

I don't feel that nervous with Friedel. In fact, I don't feel nervous at all, which is a nice feeling.

I rate Gomes, a lot. One of the best shot stoppers I have seen. Maybe he can learn well from Friedel over the next year or two.

Win Win.

However, Friedel will make a mistake, as all keepers do and thats when Spurs fans will jump on him :-D

I feel less nervous with Friedel between the sticks than I do with Gomes there. He just looks more solid at the fundamentals (coming for crosses, commanding his area, reading the game etc).

I think Friedel and Cudicini both look more confident and do the simple things better than Gomes. At the end of the season we looked much better in defence when CC took over between the sticks and on the one game Friedel has had he looks to do the basics well plus makes saves. Gomes for me right now is No. 3

Friedel doesn't look agile enough IMO, but that's purely based on the Man U game and the S.A friendlies. I think Gomes is the best we have in the squad, personally I didn't see that many positives to signing Friedel but I trust the club and hopefully he will push Gomes and Carlo on this season and teach them how to take control of their defence they both show inferior leadership qualities compared to Friedel. Carlo's handling looked a lot better last night than I have seen from him.

Watching the Utd game i just a had a funny feelign that Gomes would have saved a couple of the goals but then made mistakes where Friedel excelled and it would still have been 3-0

Definitely feel more confident with Friedels positioning and reading of the game, and when he comes for crosses my heart stays where it should rather than fighting its way into my mouth!

All that said, i still think Gomes is our best keeper and i think Brad will help him develop into an even better keeper.

That's weird, I was actually going to start a thread about the signing of Friedel.

Let me just state for the record that I rate Friedel, and always have. I think he's been one of the best and most consistent keepers in the EPL.

But I have a huge problem with his signing. We have Gomes(30) and Cudicini(37) who are both superb keeper/back up, taking up two squad places. If Friedel was brought in to replace Cudicini as back up then fair enough. But what would be the point of signing a 40yo as first choice ? where is the future in that, even if he was better than the current first choice, which IMO he isn't.

If we wanted to replace Gomes (which I don't yet) why not sign Given (35), but better still why not have signed the most promising young goalkeeper we could find and not use up a squad place when we already have Gomes and Cudicini.

It's short termism that is going to mean we loose Gomes and Friedel in a years time and then have to look for a keeper of Gomes's quality (or better according to your like/dislike of him).

Exactly how I see it. I still think its a strange signing, would rather we had looked long-term.

Friedan showed us what we've been missing

Gomes will be on the bench all season

Friedel is another example of 'short termism' like Gallas and Adebeyor.
Meanwhile Man Utd sign a promising 19yr old who could play for a decade or two.

Rate Gomes above Cudocini.
Friedel worries me on crosses and corners as he seems rooted to the goal-line.

Gomes confidence will be completely shot by this signing and may well go back to PSV where he was highly rated.

Always liked Friedel but doubted the signing due to his age.

However, if he continues as he did Monday then he'll be an improvement on the Gomes of LAST season
