Begiristain favourite for Spurs role
Former Barcelona technical director Txiki Begiristain is the new favourite to land the same post at Tottenham after Franco Baldini ruled himself out of the running.

Spurs are currently reviewing their player recruitment structure and Baldini, who has a good relationship with manager Andre Villas-Boas, was believed to be set for a return to English football, following his spell as Fabio Capello's right-hand man with England.

But despite being heavily linked with a move to White Hart Lane, Baldini, currently the general manager at Roma, has committed his future to the Italian club.

"I have nothing to say on this matter as I have an obligation over here with Roma, it is a long project to which I am committed," he told ESPN.

Baldini's decision opens the door for Begiristain, who left the Nou Camp in 2010 after a successful seven-year spell. Spurs confirmed to ESPN that they are seeking to bring in a 'recruitment specialist' to work with Levy, Villas-Boas and the scouting team.

A Spurs insider said: "We are reviewing our recruitment department and it would be wrong to assume anything as we are still in a review process."

Villas-Boas, who has worked with technical directors in the past, has revealed he would be comfortable with the introduction of the role at Tottenham.

"The chairman is looking to further evolve in terms of the structure that surrounds the club," he said. "I have worked with one at Porto and Academica and had no issues with that and I certainly promote that.

"In the end the structure that surrounds the football club is down to the chairman. It is not up to me to decide, it's up to the chairman. There are discussions and talks but in the end it is a club decision. I certainly think he is looking to further evolve in terms of the structure that surrounds the club."

First choice Baldini
Second choice Begiristain

Wish we could just appoint someone, rather than doing our recruitment in public. Bit of a slight to Begiristain if he knows he was second choice.

Guess Begiristain is a free agent though, so we'll know if he's on board soon enough.

Would getting Barca's old DoF, instead of one of Madrid's, harm our new special relationship with Los Blancos though?

No, I doubt Madrid will get their knickers in a twist if we were to sign any ex Barca players let alone their ex Director of Football.

Begiristain was linked a while ago - I think I put a link up for it when it first originated.

I think Real would cream themselves at the possibility of using us as a back door to getting their hands on some Barca youth product (y)

Seeing as Tim Sherwood is touted to be next Blackburn manager, I do believe we have genuine interest in procuring a DoF or techincial director (whatever guise it is labelled).

Where's that come from?

2+2 in essence but reports have suggested that Blackburn's 'global advisor' (snigger) Shebby Singh was at WHL yesterday and is interested in Sherwood replacing Kean.

However, apparently he is a Spurs fan so like I said, might be complete horse shit but you never know.

For what it's worth, I would imagine Sherwood would take the job and a good platform for him to launch his managerial career considering he is highly rated.

2+2 = ?

Might be something in it, then, might not be.

I'm not so sure that Sherwood would jump at the chance, TBH. I'm sure he has an emotional attachment with them, he won the title there, afterall. But it isn't exactly going to be an easy job for anyone. And, at the same time, he knows we are going places, he knows that he is highly thought of at the Lane and has recently been promoted. It wouldn't surprise me if he took the job, if offered, but, equally, if he turned it down.

As in, 2+2 = 5! ;)

Like you said, he is seemingly highly rated at this club, alluded to by JJetset but then the chance to manage a club with aspirations of jumping straight back to the PL may be a great stepping stone in his career.

On the other hand, he may be next in line after AVB, which obviously I hope won't be for many a trophy laden time but perhaps still rings true and that might be a good enough reason to stay.

Anyone to do with recruitment at Porto we should be looking to get in, their scouting system is incredible.

Would be nice to get him...just to stick it to Da Costa :)

Seriously, though, I think our best hope of getting him would be if he feels his job at Porto is done, because, according to this, he is fiercely loyal both to Porto and to Da Costa.

Baldini - the man who discovered Huigain, Gago, Samuel, Cassano etc.

Begiristain - the man who built the system that developed Iniesta, Messi etc.

Henrique - the man who discovered Falcao etc.

I like the look of our shortlist

took time out from the wank bank Dan?

I agree though. If indeed it is the model that we are working towards, then that list is as good as it gets.

I wonder how much of this has to do with Levy wanting time away from the club

Everything is my guess. Safe hands if you had them involved, means he could concentrate on stadium and extract himself from the office a little more regularly.

If we're gonna do this tho, I'd like to see an appointment sooner rather than later.. The guy will need time to settle, and move etc. and time to adjust his book for prem league suitable guys, time to make moves, and time to finalise deals.

No point getting him in on 31st jan.

Would the Porto guy give more or less chance of Moutinho? seeing as we'd probably have annoyed Porto immensely by then.
