I guess no one today here will question why we are looking to sign him....

Bar Bentancur, our midfield isnt good enough - thats the reality. Bissouma has potential but Conte isnt trusting him much
I would. I’d totally question why we want another midfielder that is basically a workhorse - a water carrier to steal Cantona’s description - when what we are crying out for is a creative midfielder who can beat a player or pick a defence splitting pass. Kessie is not that player.

Really have never got the dislike of Hojbjerg - people must be seeing something I don’t.
I’m with you. A midfielder who adds a few goals and drives the team forward when they need it. If he was playing for a different Champions League team, we’d be all over him.

Not sure how you can sign someone like Kessie and still complain about lack of creativity.

The only creative midfielder we've really been linked with under Conte has been Eriksen. I'm still baffled by what on the outside appears to be a lack of interest in a midfielder of the more creative mould. Also why I don't know where the blame lies when Conte complains about a lack of creativity. By lack of creativity did he mean due to no Kulusevski and Bentancur most recently? Because IMO we need more even with them present.

I guess this has been discussed to the death here - Conte doesnt want to play out & out creative player. Even Eriksen was only used in deeper role.

So, you can have a view on what kind of midfielder we should buy - that may not be true for Conte

I understand what you’re saying, but I’m talking about the type of player, not the role or position that he plays.

To demonstrate:

Your view - Conte played Eriksen in a deeper role.

My view - Conte played Eriksen.

If he’d wanted another workhorse, he’d have gotten Inter to buy him one. He didn’t.

While Conte got Eriksen in Jan 2020, he rarely used him. Eriksen infact couldnt play what Conte wanted in first season.
Inter sporting director Giuseppe Marotta, on the record said in Dec 2020 that Eriksen was in transfer list. Week before window closed, Eriksen was came as late sub and scored a free kick in cup semis. Inter had injuries, & Conte decided to keep him. Only after that, Conte played Eriksen in deeper role and it started working.

So, its not like Conte played Eriksen always. Conte was forced to play Eriksen, somehow Eriksen clicked.

I find it difficult to accept the strictly no creative players idea when all 3 of Barella, Brozovic and Eriksen are all technically gifted players with good passing ability. Even at Juventus he had Pirlo, Pogba and Marchisio who was quite a Barella type busy number 8. He doesn’t have a history of packing midfields with cloggers at all and I find it quite strange that this has become a narrative now

I didn’t say he always played him, I said he played him, a creative player, over other options.

In fact, it could be argued that being forced to play him actually helped Conte discover and understand what a creative player can do in that position, which was so successful that he kept him as first choice.

Edit: apologies, this is a thread on Kessie. I’m against signing him ahead of more pressing needs.

Brozović won the award for Seria A midfielder of the year last season (over the likes of Milenkovic-Savic, Barrella). Doubt they would do that swap unless it's some Juventus type book balancing deal, like Arthur-Pjanić swap.

Indeed. He is a solid player that always give 100%.

Our team has some issues, but Hojbjerg isn't one of those.
He was today, dreadful performance, esp first half, not tracking back, waving hands blaming everyone else, sideways or backways the whole time, kills so many breaks.

PEH …. Just not good enough .. he was so poor today he gives 100% most games but a very limited player imo … good for bringing on to protect a lead .. we need players of a higher level to move upwards

He's 100% a massive issue. His technique can often cost us possession, keeps passing sideways, can't beat a man, rarely available for a pass to work the ball out. He isn't even positionally great in a defensive sense. He's one of the main reasons we can't ease the relentless pressure on our defence. Having said all that I still think he was one of our best players in the first half of the season. For me Kessie is a slight upgrade but still has a lot of the same flaws and for that season I don't see the sense in getting him. I'd rather a proper DM or someone who can pick a pass.
