I’m not sure we’d have had a choice. Argentina and Brazil are different kettle of fish to other South American nations. Players like Lo Celso would likely never play for them again if they refuse a call up .

Brazil are without Alison and Firmino from Liverpool, Ederson, Jesus from City, Rafinha from Leeds etc. Why did we get involved and not stick with the other clubs?

Remember that time we let Son play on the Asia games despite it not being a FIFA recognised tournament? And then after he won it let him off from military service which would’ve all but ruined his career in his prime? And then this summer, when Kane wanted to leave and we had no manager and everyone was like ‘oooh our club is so shit’ Son signed a new contract that would basically keep him with us until he was past his best?

Perhaps supporting our players, to our own detriment, with their wishes with regard to representing the nations isn’t a stick with which you beat us.

The military service skip thing benefited the club, and it was an isolated incident.

This doesn’t; at all, and in a collective legislation that affects all nations; all other PL clubs bar Spurs and Villa held the line and refused to release them

Why should Argentina play their first team while Brazil are hobbled for their players and their clubs playing by the rules?

This is proper authoritarian bullshit. Yes they lied and are in the wrong, but letting the match start and stopping it after five minutes is just a big propaganda flex.

FIFA should come down like a tonne of bricks on both Argentina and Brazil.

Lo Celso and Romero looking very naïve for insisting on going now.

Surely they should have known that they’d be ineligible to play.

Although it stinks of opportunism by Brazil - the Argentina squad would have left the country in a few hours anyway. I hope the match gets awarded to Argentina.

It’s blatant political interference from the Brazilian authorities.

Is this for real?

Well he's going to be travelling and quarantining both ways every month until Easter. So realistically isn't going to be a part of the first team for any tangible time until the final part of the season. So I think it's a fair question as to whether we might have been better to sign him next summer and put our focus elsewhere for this season.

One benefit of this whole madness is that it gives the club a stronger leg to stand on when refusing to release the players moving forward. I can understand why we relented for the sake of maintaining good relations with the players if the Argentine FA were threatening that the players would be blacklisted from the World Cup, but now that the players have run into legal trouble we have another perfectly legitimate reason to keep them away. Now if the Argentine FA feel aggrieved they can blame it on the authoritarianism of the Brazilian government and not on English clubs. We really shouldn't be letting them go again, and this gives us a perfect excuse.

Five minutes after Brazil v Argentina kicked off, it all kicked off. Brazilian officials stopped the game with orders to deport the Argentinian Premier League players.

I didn't realise there were international breaks in December, January and February as well. That's quite the surprise

We weren’t aware this would be such an issue until after we’d signed him. Previously there have been exemptions for elite sports people. But the government have decided not to do that this season.

Has to do with South America having a condensed World Cup qualifying schedule, it’s a one-off just for this season.

Can you imagine the absolute meltdown if we walked away from signing the Serie A defender of the year purely because we weren't worried about him missing matches because of intl duty, come on be serious

A government led by a far-right authoritarian like Bolsonaro spinning a non-political event for propaganda purposes??? Surely, you jest...
