Why are people giving Davies stick the guys played 1 competitive game for us. I admit hes not a worldy but hes 21 and more solid defensively than Rose IMO.
Fazio from what ive seen is slow... BUT he is an upgrade on Dawson soo I wouldn't be annoyed with Dawson out and Fazio in.

My judgment of Davies is based on watching him numerous times for Swansea last year, where his deficiencies were on full display. He isn't going to magically become more athletic, or gain more pace, and it's unlikely he'll ever be able to whip in crosses with the type of precision or whip that is needed of a top LB in the system Pochettino likes. I and Ossie85 made these points very early in the summer, and the fact that Rose is starting validates that Davies isn't anywhere near as good as the perception of some here who clearly haven't seen him play a good deal.

Spanish source AS report Federico Fazio is due in London today to finalise his move to Tottenham.

Davies created a lot of chances for Swans last season though? He does have a good delivery on him. He's also solid in the air, and less error prone than Rose. I do like the idea of competition, and hope has a good season too, but Davies for me is already a better footballer.

I find it hysterical that people on here think they know more than our manager about who will fit into his system. And before people say 'he's not choosing the players'. ITK has stated that he's part of the team that chooses players.
For a laugh let's all focus on the positives.

Don't know much about this chap but if he is captaincy material this is a definite positive as well as whatever his other attributes are.....

Anyone know how fast he is??

"Not quick" is probably the best way to put it.

And he has the turning circle of a battleship, but IMO he's an excellent defender.

Although Sevilla lost the Europa league final, I thought he was outstanding.

There are far too many sources reporting this for it not to happen. For what it's worth, I've seen him play a couple of times and he is certainly a massive upgrade on Dawson and would be a good partner to Verts. I know it's been stated but he reads the game very well. Pochettino knows what he wants to fit his system and if Fazio is one of those players then you have to trust him.

as I have been saying all along Rose is a better class of FB then Davies and I had numpties on here negging me because of it...Davies is slow and gets turned too often.

Could be very similar to the Koscielny and Squirtersacker partnership at L'arse

Also, he played LCB for Sevilla in that game. Does anyone know if he usually plays on that side, or is he just versatile and playing there because the other Sevilla CB was more comfortable on the right?

He's played both sides and looks comfortable enough playing either, but lacks agility which can expose him to players running on or tricky little players with good ball control

Did the fact that Brad started ahead of Hugo when he arrived validate Hugo wasn't anywhere near as good as people thought? I think particularly this summer with a curtailed pre season Poch has tried to maintain some familiarity. I didn't see Davies not starting against Wham as any thought that he didn't think Rose was a better option per se but probably better for the team on the first day of the season in a London derby
I do agree that Davies is not a top LB at this stage but equally I think he has far better qualities to enable him to develop into oner than Rose. Could we have gotten better? maybe but Coentrao is staying at Real, Bayern bought Bernat, I'm not convinced Moreno is better, Rodriguez hasn't moved and would no doubt have plenty of competition if they were to sell, Shaw a really promising youngster but also nowhere near the finished product went for a fortune
There is a dearth of quality LB's, in the circumstances much as I'd have loved Rodriguez or Bernat I'm pleased we got Davies. To me he's an upgrade on Rose and one I feel will continue to develop, in all the time Rose has been with us I haven't seen any improvement

Just watched the Super Cup, keeping an eye on Fazio throughout. Things I noticed:

1. He's not as slow as has been made out, his size means he takes less strides to cover a distance, which can make him look slow. I did notice him get caught on the turn by Ronaldo with a sublime bit of skill, but I don't think many defenders would've cut the ball out in that situation. More importantly, he didn't need to get involved in many footraces because...
2. He reads the game very well. He intercepted the ball countless times, stepping out in front of the attacker.
3. He's as strong as an ox. At one stage he intercepted the ball, moved up the pitch, bounced a Real played off of his arse and then played a great ball forward to Bacca.
4. He wins everything in the air. He was literally clearing every free-kick and corner by himself in the first half.
5. He's technically sound.
6. His decision making might not be the best. Watched him put a few balls behind for corners when he might have been able to clear them for a throw.

He was a real commanding presence throughout, something we've been lacking since King retired. Need to see a lot more of him, but for £6m I think he'd be a solid acquisition.

I could never imagine anyone describing a Dawson game in the same way - even against the likes of relegation fodder. Enough said.

Agree with all this. Only seen him play 3 times but in those 3 games he always stood out as his performances were top notch. A real solid no nonsense defender who wins everything in the air and his positioning always seemed to allow him make vital interceptions. Thought he looked class in the Europa league final last season.

I may be alone in this but for 8 million (or around that figure) I think he will be a fantastic signing and really hope this deal happens. Clever move by Poch imo!
