I would say the so-called "English premium" has as much to do with the homegrown rule as it does with clubs and supporters generally valuing having English players in their team. For some reason, teams like Liverpool (and us a few years ago) want their teams to have 7-8 English players in the starting 11, so they seem to be willing to pay more for such players. That's my view on it anyway, maybe it's also because in England English players have more commercial power.

So with all the interviews with Dier and they way he is talking it's sounding like he is pretty sure to be in the first team squad. It was my thought as well though that he would be as paying out 4 mill at least for us is not normally in the area of one for the future lets stick him in the reserves kind of thing. Anyone else agree with me that we might see a fair bit of him this season.

Carling Cup, EL group stages I'd imagine. Could play about 20 games maybe if used like Fryers last season.

According to a Everton supporting mate, Dier had 2 years on loan at Everton from Sporting. If this is the case, would another year with us means he counts as a homegrown player?
Bah humbug, just checked, was a 18 month loan. Looks like he will miss out on being a HG by a matter of months.

IMO, it's not being English or home grown that makes them expensive, it's buying from British club's, as they are generally richer than most clubs oversea's. For example, I don't think Coutinho would leave Liverpool for less than Sterling or Lallana.

So impress with Dier tonight, good on the ball, handled the defense well with Kaboul. If we can have JV & MM and first choice, YK and ED as back up... Not too sure about the fitness of Daws and Vald... But i feel better if either leaves after seeing Dier today.

Dont forget that if u seller to a club in the same league, two things happens, u strenghten the other team, and weaken yourself. Hence why we might have to pay 50% more players in the EPL. also explains why levy likes to sell off good players overseas, so it won't come back to bite us in the ass.

Can you imagine how upset we'd all be if Levy had gone and spunked £63M on James Rodriguez?

Any way back to Dier. Liked the performance. I think we'll see quite a bit of him this season.

I was very impressed with his solid and mature performance yesterday. His positioning was particularly pleasing to see, especially at the left CB side. Dare I say he looked like the senior partner to Kaboul.
Just a shame we didn't get Lovren as well, he's currently looking very good in his home friendly today.

This kid looks like the real deal.

Not just because of the goal, which was a perfectly timed run, perfect first touch and perfect finish, but more importantly because his defending looks composed and he reads the game really well.

Can't wait to see him and Jan together.

Kyle Walker would have stumbled over and missed; Eric Dier has that composure about him.

I expected a cultured, composed, strapping young CB.

What shocked me was his pace. He just looks like he should be slow, but he's damn speedy!
