If Ancelotti or Klopp were interested in joining us would you keep Poch?

Cruel, but I'd dump Poch in a heartbeat if Klopp expressed interest in the job. I think Klopp and Spurs would be a wonderful combination, and I think he might be the type to even take the job.

I have this unfortunate hunch that he may end up at Liverpool next season.

Mixed bag for me. Pleased we managed to get 6th.

But unhappy with last couple of years transfers and the current squad.

It would feel so wrong to dump Poch so quickly, but it would be a good decision on paper to hire Klopp. Hopefully we continue to see an improved squad and improvement from Poch as a manager.

See, I feel the same about feeling unhappy with transfer planning the last couple years, and was disappointed we didn't take any steps to rectify the mistakes of 2013, but that makes me all the more surprised we finished fifth (despite being handed it by the Merseyside clubs).

Above expectations. Was prepared to write this one off, thought we'd be top 7 and happy with 6th. Getting to the final was little bit flattering, considering who we played to get there - but still was a definite positive. Harry Kane did the business, and needed to due to a woeful defensive record. Right now I'm absolutely delighted to finsih above Liverpool, for the sheer fact that Brendan Rodgers has to swallow his ridiculous comments.

Next season, we need some experienced steel. Cambiasso has shown how much impact even an ageing top class player can bring, would love to see us with some of that. Kane will need to work hard in the close season, as everyone will be gunning for him come August, and in honoured fashion looking to put the boot in - both on the pitch and press.

No, I honestly think we have to fail in order sack Poch because we have had so much change

That said Ancelotti doesn't normally need a season to get things working

I'd be torn. Maybe unfair but I'd take one of them.

5th place, a cup final, Kane and his 30 goals, emphatic wins vs Chelsea and Arsenal + not getting spanked 4/5-0 vs the top4 is an improvement, young team etc.

Negatives were less points, a poor start and poor home form, some dodgey performances but all in all a very decent first season and hopefully a good platform to build on now.

As expected wins? As expected???????
Who expected this manager to get worse results than our last manager?
Bollocks!

Managers. Your boy Sherwood didn't get all of those points himself last season.

I'd imagine 'as expected' is getting a lot of votes because the majority of people understood that this was a transitional season, and that it would take a bit of time for Pochettino to implement the sort of changes he wants us to adhere to in the long-term.

So not "bollocks" at all. It's a perfectly reasonable view that just happens to go against your opinion.

I think if you look at the threads at the beginning of the season getting 5th and a cup final was probably above expectations. 5 less points and letting in so many goals was probably below. So all in all about as good as many of us expected.

Overall, and on paper, its a decent first season for Poch. 5th place and a final in a domestic cup competition is definitely a very respectable first season - all the while assessing the current group with a view to being in a stronger position to make the necessary chances this time around in the upcoming summer window.

The context has a slightly different feel to it however. I'm still just as perplexed and bewildered as to why he abandoned a winning looking formula. In February we were in an excellent position in the League, alive in the Europa League and the Carling Cup Final to look forward to. And what made it even more exciting was the football we were seeing against the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool etc and of course evidence of his style.

From a position of such strength, and the manner we had started to achieve this, Poch of course deserves great credit. But then he made inexplicable changes and even more frustrating was the persistence he showed in sticking with them. A bit too ominous for my liking and we really did tail off. Away to Burnely, home to Villa...it was very disappointing. Even before that against United in the crunch tie he still had a chance to revert back but alas he persisted with the likes of Townsend who just won't press from the front - he even hooked him early in that game, an admission of getting wrong. I just found it baffling and disconcerting that he was sticking to a side that wasn't getting remotely close to implementing his style after a side that was doing so just weeks before.

All that said we don't know what goes on behind closed doors and perhaps his hands were tied to an extent. I hope he gets in the players he needs because Poch is pretty rigid and inflexible so its pretty essential that he's given the type of players he needs.

Pretty good first season all in all especially when you consider how young the core group is, but we'll need to see more evidence of the team being better coached next season - from the point of view of organisation and collectively working better as a unit. To achieve that I think he does need more suitable players but ultimately it will be down to his ability next year. He'll have had adequate settling in time, plenty of opportunity to view the players and how they gel etc and it will be up to him to show his worth. This time next season will be the serious review IMO.

I''m a big Poch fan, but trying to be balanced and objective at the same time.

Fantastic post, completely agree.

The issue with this thread, is we expected many different things in several different areas at the start of the season

I expected us to finish 6th, so we did better than expected
I expected to get the same points on last season, so we did worse than expected
Expected players to improve under some good coaching, we did probably just better than expected

However the biggest one for me was
One of the main reasons we got Pochettino was because of his attractive style of play and bring good football here and the performances and not necessarily results - we did worse than expected

Tbh it's gotta be above expectations.

We've been SO inconsistent this season and scraped 5th by the skin of our teeth. Our competitors will call us lucky, for sure. What was it, +5 goals or something? That's surely up there as a record?

Very happy thought, but we desperately need improving in key areas.

As Expected... Meaning we are a top 6 team and we finished within the top 6... How's that surprising that "As expected" wins?

We must remain calm and give poch a modicum of credit.
5th to me was above expectations but when you take away Kane's amazing breakthrough and obvious great wins over a couple of despised rivals there was not so much to cheer.
If poch is backed and allowed to shape the team next season we are fighting for 4th to 6th place no more.
The negative stench of so many unwanted wasters need to be removed from the club but do you see levy taking a £20m hit on soldado think not.
We really need 10 out and 7in too much for one window
