I think that Bent is all about service.

If we get decent crosses and through-balls to him he will score and assist.
He's never going to drop deep and get the ball so is always liable to disappear from games which is something we saw from Defoe, especially over 90 minutes.

But if the likes of Huddlestone can get the ball to him in the right places it shows why his goals/assists ratio (excluding penalties) and shot accuracy is on a par with Berbatov's (cheers to Bobbins and SS57 for those facts).

He might not possess the bells and whistles of our other strikers but with the right midfield could actually be just as effective.

Totally agree. Could not have said it better

Bent is the typical striker, fast, powerful, playing at the tip of the spear. I loved it when he came on and both Keane and Berbs dropped a bit deep right behind Bend. I only wish the players without the ball moved more when we have possession and we are in the opposition's 1/3, we kinda tend to get a bit static, which is why Portsmouth kept a clean sheet for good 80 minutes.

Keane came too deep today, really pissed me off, it needed stretching, and that's exactly what Bent did.

It says enough that he got MoM from skysports after playing juts 20 minutes.

Also, The Bent and Hudd partnership could be awesome in a 4-5-1 backs against the wall job. If Pompey had have had Bent instead of Kanu they probably would have won today; felt Kanu's lack of mobility allowed Daws and Woody to push high up the pitch and stifle them. Bent has the ability to make the playing space on the pitch a full 40 yards longer.

I think Darren had a good game, this will certainly boost his confidence and I hope that he will use it well to start converting more goals..

Bent definately offers something that Keane and Berbs rarely do. He has real pace and direct running, and as long as he realises that he can do the simple things and concetrate on getting on the end of things I think he will show that he has a role in the team.

What I liked with the first goal was when the ball went out to Chimbonda we had Keane, Bent and Berbatov all up there, with Steed a little bit behind on the right. Too often our play is infront of the opposition rather than behind them because the strikers are marked and out numbered, so have to drop deep to get the ball, and their arent enough runners going forward. Maybe Bent encourages this because he is always up there, and you know he will be heading for goal

That's really mental. I was at the game, and I was thinking Keane was having a blinder, and that he was involved in everything. Having now seen you say that, I think you may well be correct. He was too deep, and he was just getting in the way of the midfield doing their jobs.

Good to see a striker with some proper pace too!

The hudd is coming along nicely, he could just do with looking up a bit quicker and I think we have a fantastic player there.

Up to his goal, I didn't think Bent was doing that much. Got beaten in the air by Hreidarsson and didn't show much movement. One inspired touch later and he's transformed. Hudd's lofted pass was superb but the way he battled past his marker and laid the ball back showed what he can do.

I wonder what Defoe was telling him in the tunnel before the game?

i love berba and keane, tres sexy, but they both drop realllly deep and link up with the midfield, so when we do get in the final 1/3 or break quickly they arent there. Bent is not that type of player and I think given a run he can score goals (he has no left foot though).

I think alot more defences would fear his pace than the trickery of Berba and Keane

Did JD ever come off the bench and change a game??

Yes. I remember one game where we hadn't given away 500 offsides or blazed it over from 2 yards. He came on and BOSH! winner!

(Southend united in the cup I remember him scoring late- can't think if he was a sub or not)

Good player Bent.

Adds a lot to the team, and things that Keane and Berba don't really do, He's more direct and will run the channels in different ways.

Great temperment too, happy to wait for his chance, you can tell he's probably frustrated, but hasn't thrown his toys out of his pram, just trys to take his chances when they are presented to him. Turned down a sackful to join so good on him.

Plus, everyone knows he CAN score goals in this league, and an abundance of them.

I think his goals per minutes on the pitch ratio is pretty good anyway. He'll always score goals; he's already proved it at the top level. It's just that he can't get in the side.

Darren Bent is a classic striker, whereby he needs a good supply line of service and he'll bang them away..right foot left foot head.

If Berbatov and Bent where to play the same amount of games, my money would be on Bent to score more goals.

And if you added up goals plus assists Berba would win by a country mile.
