Are they replacing Ramsdale? I think they're very happy with Ramsdale. I think they've signed Raya to have two very strong options for 1 spot and to not have a big drop in quality if one gets injured. They'll have a lot of games this season too and are planning for that to be the norm in seasons ahead.

As others have said, we might well have struck gold with Vicario, but he's unproven in the Prem while our neighbours have two proven PL keepers. We're the ones with our neck out. They've got the issue of keeping them happy, but I'm not aware of this being some kind of plan to oust Ramsdale. Is that the case?
Both want to play in the Euros, both think they should be 1st choice. I don't think it'll be all sunshine and rainbows.

Name another club with 2 top keepers?

Stats are one thing and maybe he let in some shots he shouldn’t have but some of the saves he made were in big moments and saved them points in big games.

True. but he was the 14th best keeper in the league:

They have upgraded - big time. Hopefully we have too!

I find it quite astounding given the money the gooners have already spent that they would then splash so much on a goalkeeper when they already have a firmly established one in place (who also cost big money).

I can see why we didn’t get Raya as no way we could have waited the late as needed a keeper in as quickly as possible.

His stats were really bad last season. Especially the second half of the season where he was one of the worst keepers (statistically) in the league.
Yeah I think Ramsdale has gone from being really underrated prior to joining Arsenal to a bit overrated.

He has the odd sublime performance but almost every time I watch him he does dumb stuff that puts their defence under pressure.

Raya might not have quite the same peaks but he's a much steadier keeper and significantly better on the ball.

Might not be a huge priority position but if they want to challenge consistently they need to make marginal gains and I think Raya is an upgrade.

Yeah I agree Raya is probably an upgrade, but still reckon Ramsdale will remain first choice unless his form really dips as he’s kinda part of their spine now and established into their patterns of play.

He’s also a gobby fucker so probably one of their leaders in the dressing room.

I think it's fair to say that if Vicario ever concedes a goal for us then we've missed out massively here, absolutely incredible business by Arsenal, Ramsdale is vastly overrated.

Brentford asking for £40m a month or so ago has really backfired on them.

Yes but Raya has supposedly agreed a 1yr contract extension in order to get the opportunity to join Arsenal now. Think we did something similar with extending Foyth's contract before sending him out on loan, though perhaps it wasn't the final year of his deal at the time.

Because this is how a top club should act, and maybe the owners have realised that this is needed if you want to compete and seccure CL every season.

just imamgine how much this raises Ramsdales focus now, as he will be benched if he does not perform.

Not going to get into the Raya vs Vicario debate, but will just say that the structure of the Arsenal deal with the loan and potential fee is a bit of brilliant business by them.

I would argue that it is more of terrible business from Brentford than brilliant from Arsenal.

I also find it odd that they have spent loads last year and this year and aren’t being done by ffp. Newcastle can’t spend lots because of ffp.

I think that the fact they’re paying £3m upfront for the loan is an effect of their FFP position

It puts them in a shit or bust situation. If they don't get the outputs to match their spend, then they are going to have limited spend in the next couple of years.

The rice deal is being paid in 18 months, so that's around 100m of cash committed. It's mad.
