Antonio Conte has agreed to join Tottenham as the club's new manager on an 18-month contract with only a few minor details left to be resolved, according to reports. The Italian boss is understood to be in talks with Spurs over a deal to succeed Nuno Espirito Santo, who was relieved of his duties on Monday morning.

The "Evening Standard" link above opens a page at the Daily Express.

Credibility gap?
And the Daily Express article references the post below from Fabrizio Romano who’s credibility on Spurs links wasn’t exactly great over the summer

This will only work if Levy FULLY backs him on his desired signings. This of course will not happen unless Uncle Joe has decided to invest in the club. Of course we all want it to work, but we know all too well how this will end.

I stopped watching spurs games a few weeks ago when I heard they were 20th in the league for distance covered. I always swore I would and always will in the future. I just can't get past that stat. It's too much negative emotion to bother with.

Not sure if I want Conte in or not (I think we have lots of other problems that it might not matter) but I'll be waiting for signs that there's effort being put in before I go back. I used to be excited by new appointments but feeling a bit defeated still. Pochs team really had us dreaming and it's that comedown that is killing me now.

As long as we follow the ENIC model we will have a ceiling on what we can achieve as a club. Conte won't be able to change that. I'm really not sure what's in it for him. An 18-month contract? What does he think he can achieve in that time frame exactly? It's not like we're such a catch he needs to prove himself to get a longer deal or something. I'm not unhappy about him coming in. I'm just struggling to see what he thinks he can do with the players he's got and the money we're likely to invest.

Hopefully he can kick the arses of the players who are not trying and get rid of those who still won’t conform. Not an easy task as it was beyond Mourinho. I think Levy will provide money because if we continue on our downward trajectory it really would be financially disasterous.

I’m not so sure, if Levy tried to Levy Conte everyone will know and Conte will simply walk away. There is nowhere to hide this time.

It's wonderful news and just what we all needed to hear. The fans have been so down-in-the-dumps with the level of football we've been playing for nearly three years, it's understandable some are going to find it hard to get enthused by this news, but it's exactly what we need. It might take time to shake off all the negativity we've been putting ourselves through these past few years, but an upgrade of the squad and a few excellent results down the road, and we'll be back to where we should have been before Jose took over managerial duties. Fighting for a CL place and seriously challenging for the title.

I get the feeling that a committee's-worth of input went into drafting this part of Conte's comments:

“Last summer our union did not happen because the end of my relationship with Inter was still too recent and emotionally too involved with the end of the season, so I felt that it wasn’t yet the right time to return to coaching.
“But the contagious enthusiasm and determination of Daniel Levy in wanting to entrust me with this task had already hit the mark. Now that the opportunity has returned, I have chosen to take it with great conviction.”

I suspect it's the truth, but nothing like the whole truth.

Hmm. The club just made him an offer he couldn't refuse.
