Not against him, but I'm not sure he's needed? We have Sarr who fulfils a very similar role. I guess we have Bissouma, Bentancur, Sarr and Maddison as certain to say with the futures of Lo Celso, Hojbjerg and Skipp up for debate. So guess he would be fighting it out with Sarr for a starting place? I'd personally like another good passer.

Gallagher is a must for me. Obviously it wouldn’t happen in one window but it would allow us to sell Pierre, Skipp and Lo Celso bringing him in. Then we’d have fantastic depth to compete on all fronts next season

DM - Bentancur, Bissouma
RCM - Sarr, Gallagher
LCM - Maddison, Kulu, Donley/Devine
On the ball Lo Celso is far more composed and creative than Gallagher. I would not swap lo celso for Gallagher given their differences as players.

The other two maybe...

I’d say the biggest difference is one of them is always available for selection, whilst the other is rarely available.

Nail on the head as far as lo celso goes. For me Gallagher replaces skipp, PEH and lo celso. Then we can find another midfield gem for a purchase and loan back for 6/18 months

Remember what Juve fans said about Deki and Bentancur? 95% of people who watch football are morons, so wouldn’t read too much into what their fans think. Have to have a screw loose anyway to support that club
So 19 out of every 20 people in this thread/site are morons?!

I think that’s too low…:cautious:

I wouldn’t say he’s far more creative to be fair. 5 assists in 65 PL games. I actually like Lo Celso under Ange but he’s never available and we should cash in while we can with his contract expiring soon

Gallagher replaces Gio in regards to being available but as far as skill set Gio is the more talented and far more nuanced. So in one sense it’s a working replacement but in another it’s a downgrade.

Of corse tho we are looking at a CM to replace PEH IF he goes which at the moment I think is much more likely in the summer. Gallagher in that context is a decent one but i feel there is somewhat of a fixation on him as if he’s the only CM out there. Not sure why. I think if Gio goes then we should be looking for a different type of player to Gallagher.

I’m not convinced by Phillips ether tbh but I prefer Bentancur further forward in general.

He was an absolute dynamo in Bielsa's Leeds team and I also didn't see much between him and Rice for England when he was playing regularly. Can't really judge him at City because he's rarely been seen and couldn't get going.

I feel like everyone has forgotten how good Phillips was at Leeds and for England. He was outplaying Rice IMO and that's not a dig at the latter just cos of who he plays for.

I would be happy with either Gallagher or Phillips. Very different players obviously but Kalvin is presumably much easier to sign this window if we want to do it, and a lot cheaper.

With the way Bentancur played yesterday, and how well he took his goal, he's arguably the one you want playing in the 8 role alongside Maddison and Bissouma. Would just be super sad not to see Sarr starting weekly as a result though 😢

My issue is that he is 28, has had some serious injuries and he hasn’t played regular competitive football since the 21/22 season. If we were getting the Leeds Phillips then he could be an asset but it would be a monumental gamble even if he wasn’t on 150k p/w.

Lo Celso can't be relied upon at all though.

Fair enough. In that case I'd rather have Fofana than Gallagher.

I love this place at times. You get people saying GLC can't stay fit and then people saying they want Phillips.

Some noise about Joao Gomes @Ghost Hardware .

Talk to me...
I’ve only seen him at Wolves, never seen him at Flamengo. He only joined them last Jan. 22 year old Brazilian CM/DM. Well rated but certainly more a solid player than a riveting one. Hard worker especially off the ball that doesn’t look to do anything too ambitious when In possession. Could see us being interested if we like Gallagher. I’m no expert on Wolves tho so I’m sure someone else can give a more detailed run down.

I would say that in general there’s been a lot of talk about Wolves struggling with FFP and that they may have to sell some assets this window. With that in mind, if true of course, I’m sure values will be reduced and we do love an opportunity.

I saw him against Fulham on Saturday and he played in an attacking midfield three ahead of two deeper midfielders. He looked busy without creating too much, hit the post with a shot and more often than not just kept the ball moving. I would think he would be more effective in a deeper role where creativity is not such an issue.

Having spoken to a friend who supports Palace and saw him regularly when he was on loan, I expected a bit more and for him to stand out in this Chelsea side.

He could come in as a backup to Bissouma but not sure he would be a starter

this reminds me so much of modric! many couldn't understand specifically what he brought to the team until he was gone - he wasn't a prolific goalscorer (Lampard) or a assist king (KDB) but he was the kind of player that wasn't outstanding at 1 particular thing but excelled at a bunch of them and had an experienced head on his shoulders that didn't know how to quit - in any game, no matter the circumstance.

I'd call it a metronome, the player is there to set the tempo for our play. We see it when Sarr is not playing, there is no tempo and we are good in phases (and bad in others). I see CG in the same way and i think Ange wants him for that reason. He realises that we have enough goal threat across the team but if we could keep a consistent tempo in midfield & through the entirety of the game then we're gonna be bloody hard to beat
