I've looked around the site to see if this was picked up.

In essence, Jamie Carragher was in mid rant after the scouse Derby yesterday.

In a nutshell he said it had looked to him that Liverpool were becoming a club like Tottenham.

Now there's a couple of ways it could be taken as meant -

The first is he was insinuating that a proud club with the history that Liverpool carry as a heavy weight, should not be turning over coaches as they are, and buying the calibre of player they have been doing.

Secondly, alternatively, he might be saying Spurs have never been as big a club as Liverpool based on history and overall achievement.

It's a comment uttered in a heated emotional moment but seeing as Tottenham were the barometer used I thought it might be worth exploring what he meant.

Ha ha that melt would love liverfool to be on the same upward trajectory as we are. Stole a living as a player and is on a par with Michael owen and stan collymore IMO.

i think it was picked up in the liverfool thread in general footy section, but basically i took it as the 2nd. he feels liverpool have fallen and think they are better than they are. there is a follow up on bbc or football365 where he expands on the idea.

i'm sure i read that he followed the comment up by stating that we thought we were a big club, but other clubs didnt think or worry about us:

here's the quote and the article:

"Liverpool are becoming Tottenham, think they're a big club but the real big clubs are not too worried about them - who they buy, what they're going to do - that's the situation as it's become for Liverpool, even when I was there at the end."

It's funny, but when I first started following Spurs and the PL 11 years ago or so, I just assumed, from the way everyone spoke about them, Liverpool were a regular champion and I was shocked to find out they've never won a title in the Premier League era. As far as "becoming" Spurs, maybe Carra should look at the end of year tables for the last 6 years. Becoming Spurs would be an improvement for them. They are becoming Newcastle. And imagine if Harry had rated Suarez...

But we are a second tier club - think some people take things far too sensitively.
We are, and so are Liverpool. Difference is, their media guys didn't realise it until just now - despite losing Suarez and Sterling, and finishing below Spurs more often than not in recent times.

Carragher is probably the most idiotic pundit next to Redknapp and Merson that Sky have on the books.

He is constantly biased and he utterly despises Spurs!

The reason he does is because ultimately we have finished above Liverpool more often than not in recent years despite them spending more and us turning over more managers yet we are viewed by Sky and their unintelligent buffoon pundits as the "Underachievers" when in reality we are actually at the level we should be and have been stable for many years despite all the managerial changes.

"They think they are a big club" No Jamie, that's Liverpool and has been Liverpool for a number of years now, living off of past success whilst the current football is utterly woeful, one finish above us in 6+ years does not mean we are on the same level.

We are better than you in our current state, until you consistently finish above us again that will remain the case, Carragher is just another typical deluded pool supporter only this time he feels the need to try and trash us because he doesn't want his beloved Liverpool to look like massive failures.

We are a big club Carragher, we might not be Man City rich or winning trophies or achieving top four but we are a big club in our own right.

Most spurs supporters actually tend to think we have no right to be in the top four and our board clearly isn't saying that is the goal that we should achieve now, stability while we build the stadium is the current goal isn't it?

So where does he get this "They think they are a big club but the big clubs aren't worried about them" from?

Last time I checked we were one of the richest clubs in the world and have finished above Liverpool more often than not in recent times we also are more financially stable than them and have been consistent in our league finishes for a number of years now something which cannot be said for them.

I don't see anybody "Thinking we are a big club" other than Sky and a few supporters who constantly set success for us as fourth place or nothing.

I wish fourth was realistic but given the spending power above us and our reluctance to pay big money in the transfer market it is slightly out of our grasp currently, trophies however are within reach in my opinion so in that respect we have underachieved but thinking we can win a cup is again not thinking we are a big club.

Take away Suarez in recent years and where would Liverpool have been? We have proven that we can survive without Bale and Modric and not only that we are surviving with the youngest squad in the league, they however are proving that Suarez made them and gave them a short spell of success and without him they are bang average as everyone expected.

So in other words, he is full of shit.

Also I would like to say, it's my 31st birthday on the 17th of October and I really hope we smash Liverpool because unlike Carragher I can admit I openly hate the club and their delusional supporters and the pathetic way in which they have acted in recent years (Racism etc)

Perhaps but then I don't recall us ever pushing for a League title come May in recent times.

that's very much the exception, don't you think? on the back of a wonderful Suarez season - who they then lost - and finished below us the next season.

Not too dissimilar to Spurs and Bale. We had our chance and didn't take it.

They have also won the CL in the Prem era, a few other cups here and there, and finished top 4 probably (can't be bothered to look it up) upwards of ten times.

They are still a big club, and are still a much bigger club than us measuring by pretty much any criteria you can think of.

That's not the debate.

The debate is that they are second tier. As are we. First tier is Man City, Man Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal. Carragher's comments make it seem as if he thought they were in that group when they are not - and they have become Spurs, when the truth is they have been in the same bracket as Spurs for a long time.

he's extremely salty understandably so probably could've been said with a bit more tact but technically he's correct. I take no offense to it, Liverpool were comfortably bigger than Chelsea, Man city, and Arsenal in the not too distant past now they are a clown college who still think they are big shots.
He's just waken up to that terrible truth after what's turning into another lacklustre season with an average bunch of players

Second tier with us by whose arbitrary distinction?Just because they can't compete with the new elite doesn't mean they are immediately relegated to our status. In the eyes of the media and the wider football pubic they are still very much part of the established elite, albeit one of the poorer relations along with Arsenal.
