Talk of ‘backup to Kane’ somehow not being important should have been to bed after our league run in this year.
There's "not being important" and then there's "not wanting to nearly equal our transfer record spend on a player who will only play if our best player gets injured again, which may not even happen, or if we have a relatively meaningless game that we don't want our best player to play in."

How many times has Kane done his ankle now? Bizarre to suggest that he’s not going to get injured again.

Even if Kane does somehow maintain a 100% fitness record, Wilson is a completely different type of striker, and would give us a lot of different options, including playing both together rather than one or the other.

I’m not convinced we need a back-up for Kane. Son can do that job, Moura too. What we need is another attacking forward to rotate/ step up for Son/Moura if and when Kane can’t play. Someone quick and direct, and technically decent

How many of Kane's anke injuries have been the result of strains or pulls or some other failure on his ankle's part? They've been impact injuries that can't be predicted.

Would you be happy to spend £40m on Wilson and then have to get cheaper options in central midfield and right back because we can no longer afford a higher calibre of player in those positions?

Doesn’t Wilson get injured a lot too? Not sure we should be buying players with that kind of record given how we barely scraped by this season- the CL final aside (which in all truth is taking on the mystical qualities of the resurrection mythologies ingrained in our cultures), we need to be sensible about where we invest our hard earned cash this summer. And fuck the fuck off any talk about Sturridge joining- we’ve got more chance of Victor playing than him

Are you seriously suggesting that a perma-injured 5th or 6th choice for Liverpool would be a better option than a player who has led a premier league attack with such success that he gained international honours this season?

For 40m? If Sturridge is perma crocked, Wilson isn't that far behind.

We need Wilson and another wing/forward. We lack so much depth.
People saying we lacked depth I never understood this. Our squad depth was always enough we coped pretty well with the amount of injuries we had however the quality was lacking imo

Don’t want Sturridge or wilson in all honesty

Neither do I. I was using Sturridge as an example of a continually injured player we wouldn't nave to spend 40m on. I'd rather keep Llorente and concentrate spending in MF and FB areas.

I always assumed that when people referred to 'depth' they meant quality.

Poch has played 2 up front in much more games this season, so there will be games that Wilson will play with Kane.

So i wouldnt call him just Kane's backup. He will be a useful squad player. If Llorente is off, then we have to sign a striker this window.

Spending £40m on a backup striker who is still a massive downgrade on Kane when we have several big issues in different positions in the squad and limited funds to address them seems pretty daft to me.

I like Wilson and I do think he'd be a great backup to Kane, but no way would I want to spend that kind of money on him, unless we've already addressed the issues elsewhere in the squad and still have money to burn.
Kane needs competition, someone who is going to scare the fuck out of him. If he knows that the moment he does something stupid, like the Delph tackle, he is going to find it incredibly hard to get straight back in the team.

Wilson probably isn’t that guy but we do need to find him

Not many forwards around who can do that, and the ones who could are all way too pricey for us.

Agree. Bale or Zaha (for £50m) would do just fine!

This +1. Without Kane our attack plays a much faster, more mobile system and their speed scares most defences. I think that ability to change so much is very important. To have a like for like sub for HK would be detrimental and make us much more predictable.

Could probably buy the best HG 18 year-old striker outside of the PL for a lot less than £40m
