Personally, I’d prefer us to keep the youngsters showing a bit of potential and sell the dross that might be either current or former internationals. I agree about not playing them too early though - a gradual move up through the levels should be carefully managed.
The thing is, I don't think it's a one or the other situation.

We have a list of players we want to sell at the moment. We should still want to sell these players, given the opportunity, regardless of how well the younger players are doing.

I wonder what happened with Markanday. I started in this thread with the impression that we rated him quite highly and contract talks were happening. Now it appears he isn't signing and we can either sell now or lose him to a team abroad in the summer or a lower fee to a British club.

I guess it's either we think he won't progress further with us or he wants out for some reason.

Its the really ambitious ones you need to keep
I think that’s exactly the problem though. Dilan has been ripping it up for the U23s this season both on the scoring and assists front yet isnt getting a chance with the first team squad despite there being a load of poorly performing players for a number of seasons now. Davies, Doch, Dier, Sanchez, Dele, Sess, GLC, Ndombele, Jack Clarke. Yes, Dier and Winks have maybe improved in the last few weeks but seriously, surely Dilan should have been given as much of a chance as Jack Clarke and Sess!

From SKY:

Spurs' Markanday undergoing Blackburn medical

Tottenham winger Dilan Markanday is undergoing a medical at Blackburn ahead of a permanent move to the Championship side.
Spurs were keen for Markanday to extend his contract - which expires at the end of the season - but the 20-year-old wants first-team football.

Obviously I am only guessing from the outside but this appear to be yet another young player who we had hope for who hasn't been loaned out or ever kicked a ball professionally.

Can't blame him for wanting to leave.

I would like to know what our overall academy-plan is... I guess our problem with the first team over the last couple of seasons has a negative effect on the opportunities for our young players... maybe we are scared of using them in our quest for top 4...as you say, at least we could loan them out and see how it goes... weird ?‍♂️

I think it became harder to play the youngsters once we became a top six side. I imagine the gulf from youth football to top 6 of the Prem is a huge jump is quality.

So my uneducated view is that the only way to bring our young players into the first team squad is for them to get first team football elsewhere first. Skipp and Kane benefitted massively from this. KWP and Tanganga really could have done with a Championship loan.

So I do wonder what our thought process is with our young players.

Agree... spot on. And change of managers doesn't help either. You need some sort of consistency there as well. I think it goes hand in hand. Youngsters often benefit from managers who sees something in them or who are not afraid of shaking things up with young players. Once at manager has settled or is given time he can work even closer with the academy.

(And if we had 1-2 extra strikers to compete with Kane it would be easier to loan out Dane Scarlett... a young player like him is in limbo right now because of our limited amount of strikers and being our academy star-striker... and he is still not getting gametime because of the pressure in the league.)
