Berby better at Spurs

So I was on Youtube the other day . Up popped a vid of Berb's greatest moments and god ,he's good .

In the responses was one from a Manc fan . ' Why doesn't he play like that for us ' ?

Started me thinking and forming theories .... At Spurs he was the undisputed king of the castle . He was arrogant and rude to others he considered unfit to clean his boots ,which included just about everybody . When he played he knew the onus was on him to make things happen . If an outrageous idea came to him on the pitch , he'd try it as there'd be no comeback from disappointed fans/players/staff cos we all thought of him so highly . Consequently he'd ( sometimes )work to the limits of his talent and pull off simply stunning things for us .

I thought he would be a sensation at Utd but he's retreated into becoming simply a good player as he realises there are players there with great talent too and maybe doesn't need to pull up trees anymore:shrug: . I think its a loss to football .

He said that utd were good for him because there was 'nowhere to hide' implying he hid a lot with us ,but alongside his disappearing acts for us came some of the most sublime bits of football ever seen at Spurs .

Disappointed he left us for medals (he'll have a sackful soon) but in my small minded Spurs fan way am happy to see that he has found out that in his lust for medals , he has lost something along the way . He lives for creating brilliance, an artist... and sitting on the Manc bench or even not on the bench I wonder if he ever thinks of his salad days with us and the unconditional love we gave him which led to the flowering of his wonderful talent .

Watching the game yesterday, I thought exactly the same thing. I still can't recall seeing him pull in a long ball from over his head with a sublime touch, or a deft header into the far corner over the keeper, or a magical piece of control followed by a stinging shot into the back of the net, or a looping, dipping, swerving free kick.

The man was a wizard with us. At the Manc's he's good, but in a more ordinary kind of way - WHEN he's on the pitch, which seems to be happening less and less.

The thing is, do you think it matters to him? As noted, he'll win truckloads of medals at Utd in all likelyhood. Do you think there will even be a moment when he looks back and thinks "jeez, I ruled the world at Spurs, but here I'm just in a red shirt with a number of my back"?

I guess at the end of the day, he's playing to win, which we couldn't do regularly enough for him, which is a shame. I constantly dream of a team consisting of current players, plus Carrick, Berba and Jol. It's nice to dream.

Berba was much better at Spurs, but he could have been better if he had a much better and determined attitude

I'd have him back in a flash. The best player I've had the pleasure of watching. I miss him, and I think deep down, he misses me.

He was never what Manchester United needed in a striker. They needed Ruud II, someone who was going to get in the box, and only care about sticking the ball in the back of the net. They didn't need someone else who was more interested in picking the ball up in deep areas and making things happen. It's not a case of him standing out more with us because of the gulf in class, but more to do with the way Manchester United play their football. He doesn't fit their style. It's sad, because he's probably the most technically gifted footballer in the league.

He is a good player, but as has been said, the wizadry just is not there anymore. However, i don't think there is room for his return, he doesn't strike me as the sort to swallow his pride. I'd have him back in a heartbeat, but as long as the medals justify it, which the probably will, I doubt he'll ever admit to himself or anyone else that Utd is not the right club for him and that we were better suited, even if deep down the artist in him is slowly dieing.

We are talking about the top assister in the league it must not be forgotten, with 9 to his name. We have at least filled that part of his game to an extent as Modric has 7 assists in the league and in my opinion is having a decnt first season (more goals would be nice), but I am already counting down the days till we next find a true, spurs mould gladiator, a complete attacker who does everything the right way. There were 6 years between the departure of Gazza and the arrival of Ginola, 6 between the eparture of Ginola and the arrival of Berbatov, so I predict that the next coming of Spur will be in the summer of 2014. That doesn't mean that until then we won't enjoy some good football and some success, but another god before then would be a bonus in my opinion. They've been getting further and further sout east. A Geordie, a Gaul, a Balkan, so expect him to be of Arabic origin, Me feeling is from Yemen.

Bit much?

I agree that he was the greatest player I have ever seen in a Spurs shirt (and his partnership with Keane was something to marvel at)

I often comment when seeing our current team play some nice football that we would be a real force had Berbatove been able to link up with the likes of Modric.

Still with the increase in wages and soon to be buldge in his throphie collection I am certain he has not given us a second thought since leaving.

I'm not sure he'd be receiving substantially more than he got with us? The pull of playing for Utd, the fame and trophies which come with it probably lure the best for much less than a Citeh, Newcastle or even we will?

I have no evidence, only my assumption...but I would guess he was on around 45k per week with us and I would imagion he is on something closer to 80k per week at united (although it is just what I assume)

Yes you are right though, he certainly went for footballing reasons rather then money.

After the way he acted I wouldn't have him back, he has found out that at club's like Utd you are just part of a team not the main man. At Spurs he was allowed to drift in and out of games, if he didn't feel like it he would just slide the ball off to Keane or Lennon then slowly meander forwards. When he did feel like it he was majestical, controlling the ball at will, scoring goals and linking play. Yet, he could only do this as we put everything through him, every attacking move we made had to invole him as he was our talisman. At utd it just simply doesnt have too, there are too many players that can make things happen and he is just someone who can get passed by as Ronaldo, Rooney, Tevez, Giggs steam off down the pitch.

He looks lost there at times and i'm glad about it. It hurt when he left, especially the way he did and I won't be forgiving him any time soon.

Big Fish in a little pond at Spurs,Goldfish in a Koi Carp pond at Man Utd

I wouldn't go as far as that, I think he has done well at Man U and has pretty much established himself as one of their first choice strikeforce (Rooney and him upfront)

He is being rested somewhat of late to also give Tevez some playing time, but I think push come to shove he would be starting the biggest games along side ROoney.

I also think we will soon see the best of him in a Man U shirt when the business end of the season draws close (big CL games or FA cup final for example)

I wouldnt have him back, I dont think he has the mentality of a Keano to prove people wrong.

Seeing him come on against Liverpool, at no point did he look a 30 mill player. To be honest, I dont think he has ever looked a 30 mill player and Levy deserves credit for getting that figure.

When they needed a goal Berbatov was still jogging around, not really showing any urgency, and not offering anything that special.

He was no doubt a special player for us, and he summed up Spurs really - moments of sublime glory, moments of abject nothingness.

funny I was thinking of starting a thread "does Man U really need Berba" thats based on how he has played so far and the fact that they seem to be doing pretty good with him on the bench!!

oh and responce to the thread I think he was much better here as his quality was much better than what we had.

Would I take him back? our position in the table says yes but me heart says no (Sol Campbell springs to mind!!)

Man Utd looked better and more threatening when he came on, for all of tevez's tireless running, whats the end product? I know he is in and out of the team alot and therefore cant get a run of form going (same with Darren Bent for any Bent haters out there)

I dont think he's gonna be leaving Man Utd any time soon, a few times already he has popped up with the winner, and that moment of magic v west brom on the byline

can only dream but we're never getting him back...i dont think levy would do it anyway he left with too many hard feelings

Krafty he is a 30 million pound player he oozed quality at Tottenham and papered over the humongous crack that we had no midfield. The reason he has not shown his class at utd is because he is not the emphasis of every attack at utd. Berbatov was the best player I have ever seen in a Spurs Shirt it is just a shame he wanted to leave and Levy should not be congratulated for the fee he got for him he is twice the player Robinho is and Real got 33mill for him.

yeah, I think the same can be said about Carrick too.. Our team went through him, and he thrived on it, at Man U it often passes him by, although he has had some outstanding games for them.. Carrick seems to be subbed more and more now too, has Fergie lost his patience with him? Hopefully it'll go the same for Berba too. (meeeow).

I do often wonder though, if we hadn't sold Carrick, would we have got to 4th in Berbas 1st season?... I think yes.... And would that have made us stronger the next year?? Yes.. And 4th again? Maybe... So if that had happened, would we have made the 50mill we got for them? Yes..

There's has been some very wrong decisions to sell our best players at this club, and it has cost us the Champions League places, I truly believe that is the case.

Was Berbs better at Spurs? No. Was he better for Spurs? Yes. The guy's still top class and I'm sure he's still showing the same magic touch he showed forus - the difference is that we don't see it so much anymore (I don't watch Utd much) - and MOTD highlights will only show the bits of skill that lead to goals or chances, not the sublime touch or turn in the middle of the park that leads to nothing. He was crucial for us, but at Utd he's just another cog in the machine, they'll win everything whether he plays or not.

Of course, he's not helped by the contrast with his teammates. At Spurs he was head and shoulders above anyone else, and the gulf in class between them made him look even better. Now he plays with equally gifted players and so, quite naturally, he appears more pedestrian.

Would I have him back? I don't think I'd like it. The magic has gone, I'd rather remember the good times.

He will be better next season when Ronaldo has moved. Then more play will go through him and he will have a bigger impact on their game.
