I just saw this on the Spurs site and thought it was very interesting. Very good of bentley to do this:

"We have a very special lot that will be offered via the Tottenham Hotspur online auction today.

David Bentley has kindly donated the actual shirt he wore at his sensational White Hart Lane debut versus AS Roma last weekend and all the proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Bill Nicholson Memorial Fund.

The shirt has also been personally signed by David and those interested in making a bid need to be aware that the auction will commence at 4pm today."

Only played two games and already donating money to charity. Brilliant!

I love him already, and I wasn't that taken with the idea of signing him originally.

Aye, but its working though. Gotta say, I like what he/the club are doing by showing the fans that he actually wants to be here.

It certainly seems that way when you see him play and score, even in a friendly.

I hate to blunt your enthusiasm but you seem to assume that he's gone out of his way to do this. They probably just said "David, can we have your shirt for a charity auction" and he just went along with it. Perhaps they didn't even ask, I don't know what happens to shirts after the game, I guess they all get washed and remain the property of the club.

I'd guess he knew about it. Wasnt it signed? A nice gesture even if it wasnt his idea and makes him more popular so im not complaining.

It's a nice idea by the club, probably. It wouldn't make him more popular unless you assume that he was knocking their door down demanding they auction it, which is pretty unlikely

Spurs Staff: Here David sign this.
Bentley: Eh? What? *signs*

[10 minutes later]

Tottenham Hostpur can confirm that David Bentley has personally sought out to give his debut shirt to charity ...

Jeez - the PR machine catches a few more weeds.

[By the way I love Bentley anyway, but come on!]

I reckon he's shitting it that the fans think he's an ex-gooner. He mentioned it upon signing, when he really didn't have to and the look on his face when he's scored betray his sheer passion and delight that he is able to contribute and enhance the club. His non-badge-kissing was also touching, in a way, as it was his natural reaction but he stopped it as he knew it would be mis-reported.

All in all a guy who seems utterly delighted to be playing for Spurs, so I couldn't really give a monkeys if it was his idea or not.

My guess is that he's told the club 'I'll do whatever it takes to spread some good early PR' and they came up with this, which he happily went along with. Expect the official site to shortly make announcements for the opening of the 'David Bentley Puppy Rehabilitation Centre' and the 'Bentley Child Daycare Creche' for him to nurse small children for free while single mothers on benefit can go out and earn money. And good luck to him, I say.
