Rose is simply not a good enough left back for a side wanting CL football. End of.

If he wants out, then sell him. We currently have two players who can cover Davies, so Rose i am pleased to say becomes surplus to requirements if he wants out.

In Rose's defence he was originally a left winger who was converted into a left back, which probably accounts for the amount of times he is caught ball watching and out of position. However there is no excuse for the constant ill-discipline and 'brain freeze' moments on the edge of the box that has become a regular hallmark of his game. The Stoke away game was a perfect example, anybody with half a brain could have figured out that he was being wound up in order to do something stupid but yet it needed a substitution from Sherwood to take him out of the firing line. He couldn't be trusted to take care of matters himself.

From his general demeanour and the fact that he seems to think a lot more of himself than anybody else does, he doesn't strike me as somebody who is likely to learn from his mistakes any time soon. I could be wrong but he just strikes me as a very thick footballer.

And I hate it when people refer to a full back as 'great going forward' when virtually every foray comes to absolutely nothing. What is the point?!

My take is that Rose will leave and we will need one more left back because fryers not quite ready to back up Ben.
Right back will see walker take the starting position when he is in game shape.
Central defenders: Verts, Vlad, one other (upgrade on Vlad) and Kaboul.

If we bought toby alderweireld we would have a natural CD and former partner for verts in the mix (and some cover at RB).

Also would take a punt and try and sell Naughton and buy Micah Richards. Provides back up at right back and additional cover in the middle.

Agreed almost certainly this was the most important transfer for us this summer.

But I say sell rose whilst his value is high. 5-7 m maybe. And use fryers as cover. As he has seemed competent when at LB just not so much at CB.
And this comment * is a defender first and foremost *
Hits the nail on the head for why rose is a weak link. He doesn't track back quick enough after a foray into the other half. And that's the attacker in him a major flaw that needs sorting out before he can become a higher than mid table worthy LB.

And I think that's unfair on naughton. Naughton was very solid. And his passing game and I would even say final ball in is better than walkers.
But all that said I wouldn't trade walker for anyone at RB. He gets far too much stick for no reason, I think people comment without watching him and read what the media says.

As I was alluding to, with an opportunity to play (given under Redknapp he very rarely played) Rose can continue in his development as a LB, but Spurs have an out and out defender (in Davies) to rely upon for the majority of the season. Rose came out and expressed his desire to play and not sit on the bench before last season kicked off, but he is hardly in the box seat this window due to his average performances last season as opposed to his promising season with a poor Sunderland side the year before.

Rose is never worth 5-7m... 3m at best, therefore we need to keep him, and continue to nurture his development. For me the lack of protection is no excuse for his poor decision making when in and around our penalty area.

As for Kyle Naughton, I do believe there is a player in there eventually also, but his first half performance against Southampton only re-iterates the point I have been making for 12 months... We had the weakest fullbacks compared with any side competing for a top seven spot... And look what that resulted in...

No seriously after his Sunderland loan they wanted him for like 7-8 m and I've heard that the two clubs after him would pay upwards of 5m for him.
He's still youngish and lbs are hard to come by.
And he's already come out and said he doesn't want to play second fiddle again. / he wants first team football....
And to be honest at his stage he if he is to Improve its through game time. Which he won't get because of Davies other than to probably inferior competition in the early cup games etc * until the later stages *
Sell before he rots on the bench for a year and value goes down to about the 3m you said...

This for me could be our most important piece of transfer activity of the summer... Too often an inexperienced Rose made poor decisions. Vertongan has expressed his desire to play week in week out at CB, and if we want to be taken seriously we need to play him there. Rose as back up, and cup games... Both will have an opportunity to play, and will continue to learn... But Davies is a defender first and foremost. Great to hear Soldado and Lamela developing a bit of understanding against Toronto! I said it all last season it was our fullbacks that was costing us, so hopefully Walker returns ASAP also!
For any team to succeed it must have a settled back four. When did we last have that? Last year Vertonghen played too much at left back when Rose wasn't there so if Walker, Davies and Vertonghen are guaranteed starters, we just need to get Kaboul or Chiriches to form a partnership with Jan, then keep everyone fit.
