I really want this guy. Think this would be the defining addition at the back that we need. Not one for the future.

Please let this happen.

Although I support all our players I don't think that fazio is good enough if we want a real challenge for the top 4.

If we're going to have defenders who are a bit crap but occasionally okay we might as well just stick with Fazio.

I actually think Fazio is better than this guy, but it's possible he and Verts would form a more solid unit.

Do Athletico need a new CB? I know swap deals are rare in reality but Fazio had a good reputation in Spain.

Personally, he is no better than what we have at the moment. For me, these aren't the signings we need to go for. We need to start attaining the higher calibre players, players who are young, hungry and have all the potential in the world.

Plus another CB? Christ. I know he is a utility man, but it would be just a waste of money for me.

If we are going to persist with a high line and 2 in CM who, with the best will in the world, can only offer limited protection to the back 4, we need fast players at the back. Alderwierald is as slow as Dawson or Fazio. Maybe he's a good footballer, but he's not what we need to work this system.

Not clear what 'promise of first team football' means.
If it means he has been assured of being first choice alongside Verts
as it says in the article I don't like it.
Not sure that the club would commit itself in this way.
Is he that good, what about Dier and others.

He would be a decent addition. At centre back right now it's a mess. Verts is a certain starter, Fazio is competent but slow, Dier and Wimmer are promising but not there yet and God only knows with Kaboul and Chiriches. Don't want to pay a fortune could certainly help out.

We cant have 5 centre backs someone has to go.

You'd imagine Kaboul and Chiriches are gone. Maybe even Fazio if there's any truth in this
We might have some difficulty getting rid of Fazio I don't rate him but he cost 8.5 million and he's had just one season, someone has badly fucked up there.

Well, yes. Which does kind of suggest he's staying, which makes me confused about this. I'd basically assumed Chirches and Kaboul were gone, but Fazio, as you say, is a bit of an anomaly.

If Atletico can cancel Alderweireld's pre-agreed £5.7m signing for €2m (£1.4m) as stated, that would mean they expect in excess of £7.5m for him from other clubs.

Vertonghen
Wimmer
Dier
Fazio
Alderweireld

Seems like too many to me, perhaps not to Pochettino. But hey, isn't that what we do? Buy lots of decent players hoping they'll come good rather than spending more on fewer of top quality. And like Dier and Vertonghen, he's versatile and can play in a number of positions. Perhaps it's all bollocks.

The loss we'd make on Fazio may end up seeming small compared to some of our other clangers (Paulinho and Soldado the most obvious). And, as ever, we don't know the complexities of the deal – maybe a lot of Fazio's cost was tied up in second-year clauses? No idea. The way we do business is very complex

The problem is I don't think Alderweireld is a lot better than what we have already, the defence has to be shored up dramatically.

Yeah, that's what I mean (sorry, long-winded way of saying nothing there). Buying lots of OK players rather than a couple of top ones.

Whenever we got clean sheets last season Fazio played at CB. Now, his not the quickest however I feel his the best defender at the club and instead of finding a suitable partnership for Vertonghen the obvious in my mind is to find a suitable partnership for Fazio.
