Bale's transfer from Southampton: £5m or £10m?

Reading the (bullsh*t) story today about Bale signing for Barca for €40m got me thinking about how much we paid Southampton for him in the first place.

I know it's always reported as £5m possibly rising to £10m. Does anyone know what the extra transfer is based on?

Obviously since we signed him, Bale has really landed on the world stage, and is arguably one of the stars of the Premier League. I thought it would be interesting to see whether this would be reflected in the transfer fee.

Or is it based on tangible facts such as international caps, goals, Spurs' finishing positions etc.

Be interesting to know what we've had to pay them so far.

I think we may have settled with them when they were in financial troubles, paid an extra couple of million to waive the add-on clauses so the total was around £7m maybe?. I recall a few stories about it. I believe the Gooners did similar with the Walcott deal.

But Southampton later wrote off the final £3m in return for upfront payment of £2m.

yeah, walnut's was 5 rising to 12 but eventually settled at 9.

It was a cracking deal. Also I still have to pinch myself at the Rafa deal. One of my favourite non Spurs players at the time, joining us for 8m?? I mean, what the fuck was all that about?

If we sold bale though is there anything in the sale from Southampton that they get a cut of any sales later on. I time scale etc, if so this may affect any possible sales as well especially at the sort of money we are talking about!

no, any future clauses were written out of the contract when we settled at 7m with them.
