I think Gabrielle Marcotti recently debunked the £400k/pw theory - he reckons it's about £250k/pw gross. Don't know how accurate he is though, especially since the £400k is being widely reported.

That's the trouble with these stories, everybody reports the contract differently to suit their agenda. If they want the narrative to be "Look what a ridiculous contract this is" then they report the gross amount including maximum bonuses etc. etc. which the player is unlikely to ever get. So presumably he'll get 400k/week if, for example, he plays every single minute of every game, scores a goal in each game, the team win the League, CL, Cup, and so on. Plus because he was a free transfer they've probably included his signing-on fee and spread it over the length of the contract. But his base salary is probably nowhere near that.

Conversely, if they want the story to be about how stingy the club is being, then the story will conveniently just report the net amount of the base salary, even though the player would most likely be earning more than that.

Can someone explain how it is good business sense to allow such a highly rated player (by some at least) to run his contract down and lose what 50 million ?

I don't think anyone's ever claimed it was good business sense have they? Including Arsenal. But they're in this mess now and can't afford to pay him what he wants because they've already made that mistake with Ozil.

I asked similar in the Eriksen thread, but do Arsenal have to just hand his registration over to Juventus in May?
The deal Ransey has struck has nothing to do with them.

Once you only have 6 months left on your contract you can sign a contract with a foreign club that commences after your current contract expires. So no it has nothing to do with Arsenal any more. They won't get any money for him nor do they have any say over his deal with Juve.

Whether or not they physically have to hand anything over I'm not sure. Presumably he is unregistered as of the expiration of his contract with Arsenal and Juve just register him as their player

In truth - it's unlikely we'll find out what the actual value of his contract is.

How did Arsenal find themselves in this situation, they're in a bit of a mess aren't they. Ramsey should have been ideally a £40-50m asset.

The amazing thing is this very downfall was being discussed in this thread years ago. It was coming a mile off and the only doubt about it was whether Spurs fans dreams would actually come true. And here we are! :)

Don't you think that was an ulterior motive though haha.

But that is an legal obligation between clubs within the EU...

I guess if it is written into his contract then it is pretty clear cut, but it wouldn't surprise me if a club with their history, might take full advantage when a rule is potentially on its way out, just like they did when the bosman rule was first introduced. And to be fair £50m is not to be sneezed at.

I think they balked at his wage demands. he apparently wanted 220K+. Is he worth that?

I believe contracts are normally dated from the 1st of July so he will become a Juve player on the 1st July 2019 and cease being an Arsenal player as at midnight on 30th June 2019.

Wenger.

He was living off past-glories for the last 8 to 10 years of his managerial reign and was actually having a bit of a mare in the transfer market during this time.

Trouble was, no one noticed until it was too late.
