Arsenal are close to completing a deal to sign Montpellier striker and France international Olivier Giroud for £12m.

The Gunners are expected to confirm the 25-year-old's arrival this week.
Manager Arsene Wenger intends to play him alongside fellow new signing Lukas Podolski and Dutch striker Robin van Persie in a front three.
The 6ft 3ins forward, who was an unused substitute in France's 1-1 Euro 2012 draw with England, scored 21 goals in his club's run to the Ligue 1 title.

Is he a RVP replacement? I don't know anything about him to be honest.

No, definitely not. He's closer to Adebayor than Van Persie, but if they managed to keep both they'd look pretty dangerous to be honest.

In fairness it's only this season that he's really banged in the goals, and even then if you add his total league goals/assists they're pretty comparable to Adebayors, only in a slightly weaker league, but it's still a very very decent signing for them.

I mean seriously we should have been going all out to get him, but theres a combo of Harry 'taking a break'/Levy having some time off for personal stuff/Harry vs Levy: The final battle and a seeming paralysis at the club and nothing is getting done.

Probably end up sticking with Saha at this rate.

Isn't it £10 million because his release clause is 12.5 million euros

If they lose RVP and sign Giroud I'm ok with that. If they keep both (in addition to having Podolski) then that could be trouble.

Think he'll flop and be another Chamakh to be honest.

This is based on hope and hatred of the Goons.

He's a good signing by Wenger that's for sure.

Buying strikers from the French league is always a big gamble - good strikers in the French league can turn out to be average here (Guivarc'h, Chamakh, Cisse) and the opposite is true as well (Adebayor, Anelka).

I have followed Ligue 1 this past season, and it was rightly voted the most difficult to score in. However, I predict even Giroud, the joint top goal scorer will turn out to be average here in the Premier League.

Small fee. Makes you wonder why we aren't interested given we need a forward, especially one with a bit of presence.

So thats Podolski and seemingly Giroud sorted for them already. Neither are elite level players but will certainly make them stronger overall.
Hopefully it's a sign they are losing the rapist.

I got's a horrible feeling we are going to go backwards this transfer window.

Chill people. RVP is probably off. Giroud has had one maybe two good seasons in Ligue 1 that's it! Pav was the same price off the back of a good EURO campaign.. Podolski has been very quiet for the Germans to in this EURO campaign.

We have got Vertonghen coming in.

In France you have many brilliant players, but why choose players just because of score ratio's? That is poor man's scouting :)

In general, I would rather choose the top 4th or 5th goalscorer than the first and second. Of course you need to take other things into consideration as well, but I am talking in general here.
