Apparently Marca are saying that we had scouts watching him play last night (or night before) and we were very impressed with him. I must admit this guy is the one I thought we should have gone to replace Modric, very similar in his movement with the ball, able to carry it which I think we lack. I first saw him at Zaragoza (i think) and was taken with him then.

is that the one that was linked to Man YOOOOO HOOOOO!!???

:pompous:

yep but moyes decided that spending £27.5m on fellaini was a better idea.

Big fan, but we're pretty stacked in CM.

stacked in terms of numbers maybe but i think we lack balance and quality. players like herrera can actually move the ball well, something we've obviously lacked since luka and rafa left.

Indeed, but at such a high price, should it be a priority? I'd say that defence and wingers are the most important position to strengthen right now.

Great player but he is quit similar to Eriksen. Glad we are looking at him though, he is certainly the right caliber of player.

I don't think he's consistent enough, never has been for Bilbao-can be very good but also can just as often make no impact.

There seems a bit of confusion though as to who we were actually watching. Hopefully it is Muniain who's contract is up next year I believe, equally we may have been casting an eye over Laporte who certainly looks to have a lot of potential

I'll agree that it should be possibly behind those, but we are indeed in need of a different kind of CM that we're lacking. Number does not equate to functionality.

Tottenham spent Monday night on an exciting Spanish transfer mission

Athletic Bilbao were excellent again on Monday night as they beat Malaga 3-0. The Basque side have settled really well after a somewhat difficult start to the season and now look like they'll be getting a Champions League place. It's some justification for Ernesto Valverde's chopping and changing earlier in the season when he seemed to have little idea which collection of players and formation worked best for him. One of the players left frustrated by Valverde's early issues was Ander Herrera.

The midfielder had been the subject of a transfer deadline day farce involving Manchester United and had to commit himself to Athletic's fans publicly, only to then lose form and be in and out of the team and played in various positions. He's come good and played well on Monday night before being taken off to a great reception with just over ten minutes remaining.

Marca say that Tottenham had spies there to watch and were left impressed by Herrera. Whilst the spy claim will likely be true, the target may not be Herrera. Tottenham aren't desperate for a player in that position and he's a bigger part of Athletic than he was early on this season, his buyout clause increases from €36m to €40m this summer.

The club have previously been linked with a move for Iker Munian (The Star, Goal, etc etc) and there were claims in Spain last month that the young star could be heading for the Bilbao exit. His contract runs out in June 2015 and Voz Populi explained that an exit could be on the cards.

There were even claims that a third party investment firm were looking buy him to avoid Athletic risking losing the player for nothing when his contract runs.

Whoever Tottenham were watching it's encouraging for fans, Athletic have some hugely exciting young players who would be wanted by many clubs. It's difficult to buy from the Basque club but Daniel Levy would probably see that as a challenge.

More likely there to be scouting Iker Munian. Top quality LW and still only 21?
That would be amazing! However i can't see it....

Ander Herrera has seemingly hit a wall in development, but has consistently been good. Muanian, though, still has big potential. I don't see him moving for anything other than silly money. He has the flair that makes him a very attractive target to big clubs.

if we want him we will have to pay 30 million at least. we wont so whats the point talking if a player has hit a wall in terms of development when he is too good for our club anyway.. will have pick of any top club in england if he feels like moving abroad and the majority move to a country like england for the money above anything else and a big few years pay day . anyone who think otherwise is deluded.. we are not one a big club. we dont play cl nor do we pay wages he can get at bigger like arsenal, united pool etc.

Bilbao press are reporting that we are competing against Zenit for Laporte and Muanian. They mention that they were who the scouts were looking at. They also state that we were willing to pay €22m for Muanian in January. They mention that Herrera and Iturraspe are two other viable targets for us.

They mention that the scout that was there was named Simon Hurt, which through google, I have discovered is actually Doctor Hurt.... so who knows.

Makes far more sense that Herrera, We need a quality left side attacking player but as much we need to bolster the team with some more character and drive and Muniain has that by the bucket loads.
If anything his desire to help push the team is his biggest weakness, trying to be all things to all people rather than focus on his specific responsibilities, but he is maturing in that and far better to have a player with such desire and to channel it rather than trying to get a player to add that.
For me if we could add two players like Clasie and Muniain into the team then you add that character drive and desire that is lacking in so many of our players. Of course both lack height but more than compensate with their tenacity and given the height we already have in other areas we have enough aerial presence.

In terms of aerial presence Laporte has that and a youthful energy that has shown him to be an excellent prospect, still very young and still learning but he is developing nicely
