I think we're all agreed that we've made some pretty good signings this transfer window.

Putting aside the Berbatov and Keane question, there's something that is preying on my mind. As the new season approaches and the end of the transfer window comes closer, I'm getting more and more worried that we haven't signed any defenders.

Now if the reports are true that Chimbonda, Kaboul, Gardiner, Lee, Rocha, and Stalteri are all leaving, then we're going to be left with a grand total of 8 defenders.

Are those 8 defenders enough to be going along with? They break down into 5 fullbacks (Bale, Hutton, Gilberto, Gunter, and BAE) and 3 centrebacks (Woodgate, Ledley and Dawson). Am I worrying over nothing, or should we be getting at the very least another centreback? Yet, we haven't been linked with anyone other than Dunne, who's signed on with Man City.

I know there's still more than a month to go, but there doesn't seem to be much on the horizon in terms of defenders.

We have good young defenders in Troy A-H and Dervitte who could step up if needed. ALso Andros Townsend has played well so far this pre-season

We signed 4 of our defenders in january, because it was a priority. We do need 1 more centre back, which we're looking for now. However, we have King, Woodgate and Dawson available at the moment so a new transfer can be signed anytime up until the window closes, and they will still have time to settle in. Unless we pick up 2 injuries at CB early on. Yet we still have Huddlestone and Zokora to cover, and dont rule out Guntar playing there. He played well for Wales at CB recently.

According to Toshack, Gunter is being groomed as a centre back by the Wales staff and they see it as his position, but we haven't seen any evidence of this at Spurs so who knows...

We've not even had a decent ITK sniff of a defender... i think thats actually a positive sign than King is going to be fit personally. If he really is close to death then we'd be so stupid not to get anyone. I think our management team are a few things but not stupid.

Got a sneaky feeling the Hud will get some more CB time and play well there too.

I'm content with King, Dawson, Woodgate as first team CB with the flexibility of Zokora playing there & TAH and Dervitte coming through.

I think another defender purchase will have to be judged carefully.

If King or Woody are injury liabilities we will need a top notch player. If they are expected to play a lot fo games we will need someone who can also cover other positions (which is why Meira could be a good signing).

We simply dont know how many games this new guy would be expected to play, and would they get ahead of Dawson?

It's a knotty one. Come to think of it, I feel the reason we haven't had that much in the way of press speculation regarding defenders is it's difficult to make up a plausible story because of the odd situation.
