Our ex-academy player Romaine Mundle started and scored for Sunderland against Southampton in the Championship today.

They’ve done pretty well with our ex-players in recent seasons, Cirkin, Clarke and Mundle

Personally I think any player that has a career in league football is a success for our academy, they haven’t all got to be stars for us. The Townsend, mason, caulker (to a degree he got capped for England but personal problems etc), bentaleb, veijkovic, smith, Pritchard, Kane group was a fairly successful time for our academy. I’ve probably forgotten others from that group too. Most played a decent level of football if, apart from Kane, weren’t world beaters

Yep, that was a very productive period for our academy. I think you could add Carroll and Livermore to that group as well.

I really thought Pritchard was going to be a bit special. IIRC he had a great season on loan at Brentford but then got injured on England U21 duty over the summer and never really looked like the same player again.

Me too in the youth games he always stood out thought he was nailed on

Add Massimo Luongo to the list too, he is a key player for Ipswich who is now 3rd in Championship. He won the Asian Cup with Ange's Australia in 2015 and scored in the final against South Korea. Guess who got a late equalizer for South Korea...:p

Must admit I did think it had already been announced, but then double-guessed myself when I saw yesterday's tweet
Isn't the point that, at age 16, the contract is more an agreed 'statement of intent' - as he can't legally sign the pro deal until he is 17.

Clubs can off a scholar plus pro when they turn 17/18
That shoukd say, a scholarship off can be on the table at any age really, but some playwrs are offered a scholar plus pro, which thry can only sign when they turn 17.

Going through contract atuff with my aon who has been offered his forat pro contract, amidst a lot of intwrest from other clubs - its a tricky thing to determine the best possibly development opportunity and eventual route to first team football, its such a big gap between youth, development and mens professional, first team football.

Its why the odds of kids making it to that level is into the millions to one
