Anyway that’s all that is meant by ‘standing firm’
What Everton did was perfect for this approach because they was standing a couple yards in front of Vicario. Then the corner came in and they would then back into the keeper. With this approach Vicario would engage with the defender first by coming out and essentially marking him. Then push off and get back to his line. I guess the alternative is to have a defender on the player instead and get them to push off so the keeper just stays on his line. I think our main issue is the 6 yard area is pretty crowded and that's why Vicario stays on his line.

Watched the highlights after reading all the various comments....minor obstruction on their first goal. Not enough to disallow a goal, but Vicario will have to learn to handle these better. A defender could help him too.
Second goal he should have been out to punch that away or at least off his line to push ball and man away.
I still like him, just being realistic.

I’d be more worried about someone standing on my cold toes in those paper thin boots they all wear. I’d be pushing everyone the fuck away from me!

Yet the same guy said this in November. Is he trying to say Vicario wasn't knocked enough to be off balance, because the replays clearly show differently.

Also the fact that he doesn't even attempt to explain why he doesn't think it was a foul in our incident speaks volumes, just a "I didn't think it was a foul".

I think he is just backing the refs/VAR.

Can't seem to imbed the clip as its too large, so tried to break it down into 3 stages..

My lad is simiiliar build to Vic, 6'4 and slim, but he is strong, the attackers tend to try and box him in, this scenario is one player doing it, a big lump backing into him, but he stands firm and out off his line.

He holds the player firm above, then as the corner is struck he pushes himself off the attacker, tried to show it here

View attachment 137573

as he pushed back he moved backwards towards the goal, creating enough space to deal with something coming in, high or low or direct, but enough time (split second) to get into shape ready to deal with the multiple scenarios that could actually happen (this particular one was more towards the 6 yard box), space shown below that he created by standing firm

As this one happened, the corner was cleared. He faced around 5/6 corners like that and was fouled twice, but dealt with them all in the exact same manner.

I questioned the pushing, I said you risk a penalty, but he just said, no thats what I'm taught to create the space, its my space...

More people on him, he'd need defeders to assist, but he insists he will still start higher up away from his line as this is what creates him the space - I've not seen anyone go direct to the line though :)
Fucking hell J, I knew you were tall but that's just taking the piss!

So regardless of if he's being blocked illegally or not, teams are obviously going to target him from corners and free kicks going forward. You can also guarentee commentators and the general footballing media will put the spotlight on him everytime a ball might be delivered into the box.

This is where Vic has to show what he's made of. A few weeks without incident and it's all forgotten, another similar incident and the heat really increases.

We need to stick somebody between him and the opposition and make sure that if he's impeded we make as big of a unified song and dance of it as possible.

Ange spoke about this:

One quote that struck me:

"I can’t praise him highly enough over the way he handled it, and the whole thing where people say ‘you’ve got to be stronger’, well, what does that mean? If he pushes or does anything to a player, with VAR, you’ve got no chance. You’re going to get a penalty against you.

"We’re telling our players now ‘just be careful in the box, they're looking for everything with VAR, you're not going to get away with a little shirt pull or a little push'. So how are goalkeepers supposed to be stronger in that sense when you've got somebody standing next to you obstructing you doing your job? If there’s contact before the ball arrives, I thought that was obstruction.

Basically what was said on here

It’s a difficult one. To me it’s obstruction, the Man City one, he didn’t have anywhere to land. It looks soft though and I think because he goes to punch with two hands more like he is making an error. He could learn to go with one hand on those so he has a bit more reach but I still think he’s being obstructed.

What a keeper though. He’s tough and I’m sure he’s not been affected too much by all the conversation around this but we should still get right behind him and let him know how awesome he is.

He also get attacked three times before the corner is taken which gives away the intent of Dias.

The Everton was blatant. He literally just backs into vicario constantly without looking at the ball or any form of intent. If that is on a player going to a head a ball it’s a foul
