What I don’t get is they haven’t tried to sign any box to box / hard men midfielders?

Even before Herrera left they need more depth there...

surprised they didn't go for Toby. As it is they'll have a strong back 4 with some solid cover and a v good keeper.
Up front if they start with Martial, Rashford, Jesse up front that is pretty good.
They probably need someone like Dier as well

Paid embarrassingly silly prices for players yet still have a lot of work to do to beef up their squad.

Improved their defence but they will really struggle in midfield this year. Matic is a shadow of himself and offers no protection, Herrera, who did that incidentally, has gone. Pogba will still be linked with Madrid til the end of the window and may even kick up a fuss yet, if he doesn't move he likely be a pain. Mata is getting on.

Then they've just taken 20 goals out of their team (Lukaku) with no serious replacement. Risky to hedge your bets on a 17 year-old who will likely struggle to live up to expectations or go through poor spells.

I can see what OGS is doing, he wants the round pegs out of the square holes but it's massively risky when you don't bring in adequate replacements or bet it all on youth.

I don't really feel united have moved forward that much maybe it was @Shadydan that said this summer would be the indicator as to\o how far they have fallen and I would agree, they cant keep their top players and they cant attract them either.

Yeah said this RE De Ligt:

It's obvious his agent is using Utd's interest in securing a better deal for him at Barcelona, standard practice. Never in a million years is he going to sign for a team with no structure and direction - not to mention a rookie manager.

People are gonna actually realise how far Utd have fallen this summer with the players they end up with.

The players who turned them down this summer were said to be Coulibaly, De Ligt, Sancho, Eriksen and Dybala and ended up with Harry Maguire, Wan Bisaka and Daniel James, for a team like Man Utd that is absolutely damming seeing as they were meant to really rebuild their squad this summer.

The defence is improved a lot but the midfield isn't anything special and their attack is promising but not enough experience, going to be difficult for Ole to last the season and get top 4.

It's an interesting one. They need to rebuild and how they go about it could set them back even further.

They clearly have funds but so do lots of teams. Players of Dybala's and De Ligt's quality will always get interest from top teams in Europe. So in most cases Utd will miss out on these players.

So bringing in top young talent is not the worst idea but they need to get it right.

Wan Bissaka and James have only had one season playing pro football at a decent level. Not saying they'll fail but certainly no guarantee of success.

There is a lot more competition in the market now for players. Madrid, Barca and United were at one time were virtually three biggest and most attractive sides to join. Now Juve, Atletico, City, Liverpool, Chelsea, PSG and Bayern are competing with them.

I don't see how they will return to the level they were at before.

This summer was pretty damning virtually turned down by every top tier player they went for.

I agree with your 1st and 3rd paragraphs as that is exactly what I was saying.

Strangest thing is a few quality signings can make a huge difference. A few years back Liverpool were spending big but buying lower quality players than their rivals due to their position. Suarez was a huge difference maker and took them from competing for top four to almost winning the league.

Moving on a few seasons and the unglamorous signings of Salah and Mane pushed them on no end. Bringing in VVD has them now as 2nd favourites for the league.

So Utd's position is not impossible. They probably need a Klopp though. Someone who knows exactly what he wants in the market and doesn't only go for the obvious talents.

In OGS and his predecessors I don't believe they have that.

When I say return back to their former status/level I mean 3 titles back to back they did that twice, sure they will win trophies but the sheer dominance they displayed I think is now not possible with other teams being so competitive.

Well sure but not sure why you are quoting me as I haven't said anything connected to that.

Presumed you were disagreeing with the third? If not no prob

I think City are in a position to dominate while Pep is there but no other club is.

At the moment Utd are going to be outsiders for top four. But a few quality signings would make a huge difference.

Just don't see it happening anytime soon.

Their engine room is gonna be woeful without a proper Herrera replacement.
