Here is the rule.

In situations where:
a player in an offisde position is moving towards the ball with the intention of playing the ball and is fouled before playing or attempting to play the ball, or challenging an opponent for the ball, the foul is penalised as it has occurred before the offside offence

For your fights at work.
What's worrying is Man City conceded a similar penalty against Schalke a few weeks ago and I don't think anyone said it shouldn't have been given. They even had VAR to overturn it if they felt it was wrong. How could a recently retired ref have a different opinion on a black and white decision is baffling.

It's a stupid rule though.

I agree it's a stupid rule, if the player isn't offside then no foul has to be made, but fucking tell me you're not going to enjoy throwing that one at Arsenal fans Monday?

Sent this to a gooner friend and what's his reply? Rule needs changing.

How did we deserve to win when the only goal we scored was from a penalty that shouldn’t have been given? Two other shots on target?

Not having a pop but I just saw this elsewhere. Don't know tbh.... ?

Pretty poor that even the ref in the BT studio didn't know that.

Speaking of BT.

The game was bad enough without having to listen to the vocal equivalent of nails on a chalkboard that is Steve McManaman (and that's without even mentioning the "content" he was spewing)

I switched to an america stream which had Lee Dixon. Tbh I can't have a pop at them not knowing the rule because I didn't know it myself, mind you I'm not paid thousands of pounds to talk nonsense. What's interesting to me is whether Dermot knows it on Ref Watch.

You would think even if he doesn't he'll be informed and will review it as though he knew...

We had absolutely no midfield . Have to question letting dembele go, we really need reinforcement

BTs coverage was awful today. Way way too many slow-mo shots of the crowd while the game was still going on in the background. Massive in screen shot of Poch and Emery on the sideline blocking a quarter of the pitch for about two or three minutes, and of course the mindless human fog horn as co-commentator.

Sanchez had no need to even go near Aubamayang at the end for the non penalty. He was going down as soon as he felt the slightest touch.

He's had some really poor games this season for us and today wasn't much better. Mistake for the goal as well.

He's 22 maybe 23 so still learning & i'd say he probably had to go near aubamayang at the end rather than just let him control the ball & have a shot. Wasn't a foul Sanchez did the right thing & not much he could do about the standard of refing

Finally got home (I only live in Stevenage - fuck Wembley) and I'm exhausted after that match.

Had everything, comedy goals (the one we conceded), dreadful officiating, Arsenal actually time wasting from as soon as they scored, a Gooner in the home end getting a kicking (I think) and some bird with absolutely massive norks in Block 135(ish).

I'm off for a lie down in a darkened room for bit.

It really should not apply here...

Kane was fouled while attempting to play the ball. In fact, if he was not attempting to play the ball, the shove probably would not have been called...
