Let's be clear - we are comfortably 3rd because Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United have woefully and abysmally under-performed.

We have lost 25% of our games - a higher percentage than anyone else in the top 6.

We are one defeat away from equaling our total from last season, we've already accumulated 50% more defeats than we had in the season before that, have already equaled the total from the season before that, and we have already surpassed the cumulative number of defeats suffered by the team who finished 4th last season.

I accept that we are on course to equal our best-ever points haul of 86, however that only took us to 2nd place, two seasons ago. This season it should just about see us in to 3rd. That should be proof enough, if it were needed, that standing still while others progress is a sure fire way to go backwards.

We've done incredibly well to keep up with the top two thus far, but we're in no danger of overtaking them, and if the three teams immediately below us were playing as they should be, we'd be comfortably top 6, not comfortably top 3.

I can't help feeling that we're at a very real risk of plateau and stagnation here - we're showing no signs of doing any better in the league this season than we did two years ago, and for all the talk of Wembley and stadiums, you can't help but feel that lack of squad investment must be the reason for that. Liverpool and Manchester City have come on leaps and bounds since then, and that's because of squad investment.

While we won't match Liverpool and City in terms of financial clout any season soon, being unable to spend £100M every window cannot be considered a legitimate reason or excuse for spending zero in two windows on the bounce.

Agree with this except about Arsenal. They are doing about as good as they can hope for with that squad and a manager doing his first season there.

Chances of prices falling in the summer are nil. City will be re-stocking after they lose the title, PSG will go again when they don’t win the CL. When your wealth gushes out of the ground there are no limits to how you spend it. No doubt you will be here again in the summer defending our next bout of inactivity, pointing to the ITK saying Poch is happy with kids in nappies. Not picking on you, it’s just you are the first of the BSoDL to post and I’m just stunned by how gullible and passive you all are.

In the spirit of being active rather than passive, what action have you taken other than complaining on a forum?

I think the biggest business we can do from now until the summer isn't actually transfer themselves: get key players like Eriksen and Alderweireld to commit long term future to the club (obviously dependent on their agreement, this isn't Soviet Russia) and getting a lucrative naming rights deal, could prop up transfer funds to the point where Poch might actually be interested in the players Levy is willing to buy

I don't know if anyone else noticed but Antony Martials contract signing comments appeared to me to be directed at Poch's winning trophy comments. I know that we were in for him in the Summer and the rumours he had a tour of the stadium and training facility. Never saw anything about it this window and I would be surprised if we didn't enquire. That being said £250k a week smells more like Man U trying to keep him happy over paying him what he is worth.

Yeah, that’ll be why Russian, American, Brazilian, Argentinian, Chinese, Japanese and Ukrainian clubs can’t sign any players. If only they were in the EU.

Depends on what immigration rules the government come up with post Brexit, and wasn't taking control of our borders one of the main tenets from the leavers?;)

Whereas we've stayed still, allowing the performance of other clubs to ultimately dictate our league standing.

To press on, we need to actively improve, not stand still and hope the stars align.

This summer is absolutely vital, no doubt about it. We thought the same last summer too, so I get the concern (and share some myself). I just can't bring myself to flip out over January, I know it is cliche but it is a tricky market, especially for CM. Look at PSG and Gueye, Everton just couldn't risk giving up the heart of their team despite a huge offer for a 29yo.

Granted we did say the same last summer to no avail, but I get the impression that the stadium issues were expected and have contributed heavily to this. Everything has pretty much been put back a year.

We have no right to be where we are currently. Not sure if it's luck or what, but I think saying it's down to others under-performing is doing our points tally a disservice. Wins have never been more important as they are now. Personally I throw draws in with losses these days (although draws away to top 6 are the exception).

I am delighted to be so gullible and passive because it ensures that I enjoy us being 3rd in the table by seven points, in the final stages of the champions league and scoring last minute winners to win key football matches two league games in a row. If the result of my gullibility is being about to take pleasure in all we are achieving then I hope to remain gullible forever.

For him to go from circa 70k up to 250k when not even being a bonafide starter just doesn't sit right with me. Where do Utd justify that? Guess like Shaw they panicked over losing him. I'd happily see us offer Eriksen £200k+ to stay now, but I consider him our 2nd best player!

With Poch reportedly rejecting all new transfers I am wondering who we are saving our shekels for? I for one am looking forward to seeing Messi trot out at our new stadium :woot:.

I love how most journalists, the manager and ITK are all saying the chairman was happy to spend money on the right player but the fact we dudn’t sign anyone is still Levy’s fault. Never change SC. Never change.

Whilst I do agree with a lot of your post, I feel there actually is a real chance of overtaking at least one of them - maybe as early as tomorrow. We are talking about 2 ‘unfortunate’ decisions from being right up there with them. I’m as frustrated as a lot of people about lack of transfers but let’s get this into perspective. And by the way City have lost 4 so far this season.

Maybe, it's all down to the stadium. Much more draw once it's finished. Save money and buy big in the summer! I like that spin on things. :)

"And with sponsorship being activated, will trigger those funds. "

Sounds like the sponsor for the stadium is already in place.

Edit - I know it's been rumoured for a while, and a lot of us have already guessed who it is.

I think we got very lucky in sissoko finally coming good, imagine if he hadn’t and we didn’t buy another CM.

Hard to argue with that, but we should probably bear in mind what Poch said recently about being ahead of schedule and that we'll only push on once we're in the new stadium.

Also Winks finally fit and hit the ground running .... Skipp already waiting - Remember when we signed Soldado and everyone was excited, he was shit, which was the reason that Kane got his chance ... sometimes not signing is a blessing in disguise... think thats the way Poch is thinking too

And if we hadn’t had 9 players at the last weekend of the World Cup with very little break and straight into the season...resulting in nearly all getting injured. We might have had even more points. Number of points is irrelevant...position is all that matters.
People say we should have won it when Leicester did but we were not good enough they won it fair and square.
For a team who haven’t played a home game for nearly two years and suffered more injuries than anyone else...we are doing very well. Get Harry back soon and who knows. No pressure on us.

Well, after all that, I guess getting a CL place next season is now the only main goal for the rest of this season? No new players to bed in, no internal squad players noses out of joint, get down to work time.

I wouldn’t be sad to see us get through against Dortmund, to then go out next round, leaving us with only the league to concentrate on.

*or obv win the league or CL - but that’s me dreaming away*
