I confess I think Gio is a terrific footballer. The thought that we’d trade him for Fati just makes zero sense to me. Maddison has been outstanding in the two matches to date and has looked like the on field leader. But his role is crucial and the only player in our squad that I think is a like for like is Gio and the drop off in quality is negligible. Fati feels like a really lazy bit of business with a huge amount of hoping for the best attached. Barcelona would dine out on trading Fati for Gio a player they want.

Can’t remember how long Gio has been with us but even in his best period he wasn’t exciting. He had the shooting power of Aaron Lennon. Far too inconsistent and if we can ask him we should. I know he’s better than others on our Sell list but nonetheless less he has value in the market and frees up squad space.

He was definitely exciting in those first 10 or so games under Jose. Was often our only source of creativity.
