Depends on the players viewpoint. A player of De Jong’s quality might see things like Eriksen and think if I go to Tottenham I can develop and get ready for the likes of Madrid or Barca but if I go straight to Barca I might sit on the bench for a few seasons.

It’s an odd place to be, essentially a finishing school for the elite but it is perhaps our only way of attracting top quality who aren’t finished products.

I get your point about further squad investment, as a club some players may think we have a glass ceiling but we don’t have a glass ceiling in terms of player development.

From the ITK De Jong may have rejected us previously but at least we are looking at the right sort of players.

I'm still waiting to see the evidence of me being a WUM tbh - it was debunked the other day yet you brought it up again because of my stance on this topic.

Any more thoughts on De Jong rejecting us in favour of a move to a footballing super power like Barca or an Oil rich team like City over us, or nah?

My opinion is to take the 100m and splurge it all on Icardi. Play Kane behind Icardi with Son and Dele supporting. Not too shabby.

Its kinda true though its all a bit of a rehash story- we have asked to be kept in the loop and are willing to match any other offers which hasn't changed, so we are staying close to this and not giving up but the likelihood of it happening you guys are as close to knowing as anyone! we certainly haven't backed away and have tried everything since before the summer.

To be fair we thought we were close in the summer before some about turns! Very difficult transfer to do with all the vested interests and parties involved and it hasn't got any easier now. We were well under the radar in the summer and he was to a certain degree but now its all out there and everyone trying to get a piece of him.

Fair play to the club for showing intent, but once the Barca and PSG's are in for players we have an interest in, it's a pipe dream. Even if we match an offer, once wages, agent fees/sweeteners etc come into it, we'll get blown out the water.

And when it eventually doesn’t happen, do we have other irons? We seem to hang out for years for a player, rather than moving on. Surely as a club you know if a player is gettable to a degree.

I actually disagree with that its just what appears in the press or you get fed. Situations change so much. There is also our database and software used with all players in Europe so we know about everyone as does most top clubs its just how we think they will be used for us to fulfill our requirements.

I do find it strange that he would go to PSG, but I guess money talks and he will have a guaranteed spot. We are not on the same level as them and may never be financially speaking.
