Liverpool paid record fees for a defender and goalkeeper recently and look what a difference it has made for them. These fees are just the market rates for players of this quality, with new records seemingly being set every latest window. Yet it seems that the new inflated market rates come as a shock to Spurs management each and every window. If Spurs really want Ndombele and £75M is what he is valued at, then we need to either pay up or stop identifying players who are clearly out of our price bracketMedia reporting Lyon want £72M for Ndombele which pretty much ties in with what JJ is saying, give or take a few quid.
In reality these are the kinds of rates we're now looking at to sign quality players with 10 years left in them, unfortunately.

Not really surprising considering the market, his age, the fact it's Lyon and how heralded he has been by the media. To be honest tho, I would rather we picked Houssem Aouar from them before he gets too stupid expensive or City get him. even if we loan him back I think it would be a wise move. Ndombele is no doub a huge talent, but like SMS, way too rich for Levy. Most I can see us paying for anyone is 50 at a push.JJ has tweeted that Lyon are asking for 'More than double our record transfer fee' for Ndombele.
If that is the case then I don't blame us for not pursuing him. No way is he worth £85m+ in his current stage of development.
Without knowing how much money is in the pot, I disagree. We're only two or three players away from truly competing, and if one of those players costs £70m then that's what they cost. Look at Liverpool with Van Dijk and Allisson - extortionate, but they've not looked back.

But isn't that just the going rate these days. We can't expect to be picking up Eriksen quality for low prices, we really need to buy a couple of finished articles if we are to compete.
I don't think we could have done. Lyon had a cast-iron option to buy from Amiens and there was no way they were going to sell him on straight away.Shame as Ndombele would be an ideal addition to our squad imo...should have picked him up a year ago

Not for a player with a handful of international caps and under 2 seasons in a poor French league.
Liverpool paid similar amounts for established internationals playing in far more competitive leagues
I’d rather we added a cigar room to complement our cheese room and a baseball pitch to add to our NFL pitch, so much more entertaining than some Carlos Kickaball. Yours, DanielThe problem that Spurs will have is that there is now evidence that signing a player in your weakest area for a large fee has shown to elevate a team. Liverpool have gone up two levels, one when they signed Van Dijk and then again with Alisson. So for us fans it's one of those where, are we going to be content signing depth at the 30 mark on a few players or going all out for one. Personally I'd like to see us make 1 big signing in the middle and then be smart about some deals in our fullback areas by selling what we have.
That’s one way of looking at it... but from Lyon point of view. They’re in the last 16 of the CL and he’s one of their best players. They don’t require the money and for them to lose him in January is just silly as replacing him would be an issue. So to make it plausible the owner is asking for over £70m.Not for a player with a handful of international caps and under 2 seasons in a poor French league.

We can't begrudge that either as we would want a lot more i imagine. We need a top CM. If this is who we regard as the ideal candidate and the money is there then we need to bite the bullet and do it.
