Congrats to the mods, who have won us a trophy. A trophy rating anyway. Must be a sign of things to come...

JJ has tweeted that Lyon are asking for 'More than double our record transfer fee' for Ndombele.

If that is the case then I don't blame us for not pursuing him. No way is he worth £85m+ in his current stage of development.

Typical posturing from Aulas (Lyon chairman) IMO. He’s a bit of a fantasist. I still remember his antics when we were trying to buy Lloris.

That said, we won’t get Ndombele.

Interesting, but if you consider the inflation of transfer fees over the last couple of years should we really be surprised? I mean chelsea rate Hudson-Odie at £40 million apparently. If Our scouts and management think he is the player we need then We have a decision to make

Sadly, looking at other deals happening in this market, he'll probably get near that sort of fee when he sells him.

We can't compete once players are established, that much is clear.

Media reporting Lyon want £72M for Ndombele which pretty much ties in with what JJ is saying, give or take a few quid.

In reality these are the kinds of rates we're now looking at to sign quality players with 10 years left in them, unfortunately.

Thanks for passing on. I have not seen NDombele outside the CL. Is he worth doubling our record ever transfer

Would make him the 12th highest transfer fee in history.

This is where we need to be braver. We are really good at seemingly identifying a player, waiting a year and then we can't afford them.

I know there is more to it than this but I suspect we could have secured the likes of De Jong, De Ligt or Ndombele if we did what we did for Sanchez. Big money, early.

Granted we can't do this every time but surely with the amount of money around we can take a 30m punt per year? Surely that's no different to taking a 5m punt 10 years ago and we used to do that regularly.

More concerning is that we aren't even taking punts lower down like we did with Alli. I suspect this is a consequence of the investment in youth facilities as Levy will be wanting the squad to be bolstered from the youth ranks but for a club like us finding an Alli or Dier cheap or even a Trippier/Davies is pretty important.

I can't imagine us doing much this window either way but there has to be value somewhere.

Without knowing how much money is in the pot, I disagree. We're only two or three players away from truly competing, and if one of those players costs £70m then that's what they cost. Look at Liverpool with Van Dijk and Allisson - extortionate, but they've not looked back.

Agree with you, we need to go back to finding the next Dele, Sanchez or Eriksen - before they become unattainable.

Interesting from JJ, and not unexpected from them - I'd say the same personally.

I think a CM is our biggest single priority. Using historical transfer figures as benchmarks isn't appropriate as it's a rapidly rising market. I can't see it sustaining, but it's showing no signs of abating.

This guy looks like a star. Not just in the making - genuinely able to compete (and dominate) against the very best now. And he's exactly what we need, aged 21.

Is he worth it? Well, not if we can get someone else who's similar (or maybe not quite as good, but sufficiently good) for less, and we can use the money elsewhere. But can we?

Otherwise we're just sitting on our hands and not progressing in the way we could. We can't just carry on as we are. The results this season have papered over the cracks, and surely the best way of keeping the likes of Poch and Eriksen (for who the most likely scenario, right now, is that they both leave in the summer - just my personal opinion) is to show the club has ambition.

Whether it's Ndombele or De Jong or someone else, there is a real hole developing in a crucial part of our team, and it has to be addressed.

At least the ITK is (loosely) pointing towards solving FBs and CM though, which is positive.
