Now the season has closed out and we're heading towards the transfer window, I thought it would be good to get everyone's take on who they want and who they don't want in our squad for next season.

With Europa League football we have a chance to bring through some of the young players and get them real game time, but there's still a few holes we need to fix before then and we need to keep an eye on making sure we hit the squad limits of:
  • Max. 17 non-HG players
  • Max. 4 HG non-CT players
I'll give it a go with where my head is at right now:

GK: Vicario | NEW GK | Whiteman/Austin (HG-CT)
Defence: Porro, Walker-Peters (HG-CT), Romero, Dragusin, VDV, Davies (HG), Phillips (U21), Udogie
Midfield: Bissouma, Ederson, Bentancur, Sarr, Madison (HG), Eze (HG), Bergvall (U21)
Forwards: Son, Werner, Richarlison, NEW ST, Johnson (HG), NEW RW, Deki

That's the max 17 non HG players, assuming NEW GK, NEW RW and NEW ST are non-HG. There's then an additional 4 HG but non-CT players (which is the max under Uefa rules for EL) and 2 HG-CT players.

Taking us to a core squad of 23 + 2 x U21 players.

In addition we then have the following U21 players who, the majority of which, we should bringing into the squad: Scarlett, Lankshear, Donley, Devine, Moore.

In terms of incomings, here's my current take:

NEW GK - need a proper Vicario rotation and replacement keeper for this season.
Walker-Peters - can cover both RB and LB and will get game time in rotation at both positions, gives us another HG-CT player which we need.
Ederson - Should be our No.1 target in midfield IMO. If we can't get him then look at other options with similar profile.
Eze - My preference for this role, but GIbbs-White another strong contender here.
NEW ST - Data led approach here is the way to go as lots of options out there.
NEW RW - Again data led approach here is also needed to find the best option for what we need.
Werner - Think he'll be a decent rotation option with experience at a very good price for us for next season.

Adding some very high level financials to that, we spent €272m with €120m coming back in last summer, so net spend of €152m.

Those players above would like total around €240m. We should be able to easily sell the following for €90m: Rodon, Reguilon, PEH, Skipp, Royal, Gil, Lo Celso, Solomon

Agree with the OP- great idea for a thread btw!

KWP and Doughty for me, as a means of helping to afford Eze and an inevitability expensive ST.

Levy has bludgeoned me into expecting us to live within our means.

So I’m prepared to accept we go with existing options on the right- we have after all spent a fortune on Johnson and Kulu (I didn’t want either).

If we let Skippy move on, as well as PEH and GLC, I’d also punt on Berkeley one a one plus one- a more measured influence amidst the carelessness in possession which grew into Bissouma and Sarr as last season went on.

I like the idea of Walker-Peters and Doughty as back full backs. How much would you think Southampton and Luton would want for them?

I don’t think Bergvall can go on the under 21 list or the B list. I think he would need to have been at the club for 2 years before he can go on that list so he would have to be one of the foreign players

2 years rule is for UEFA competition, so he'll have to be on the A list (25 man) if we want him to play in Europa League.
Premier League however is strictly by age, he'll count as U21 in PL and not need to be among the 25 to play in domestic tournaments.

If you recall the trouble we had with set pieces last season we need to consider players that are physically imposing and carry aerial ability. Of all the players listed so far (KWP, Doughty, Ederson, Eze - none of them are over 5"10. ).

By the way, would anyone like to guess what is KWPs weakness statistically? Defensive actions and aerial duels

If I'm looking at squad building then here's my take

TL:DR
Locatelli, Hickey, Kayode, Olise and Toney

23 man squad

GK: VICARIO, Austin (HG/CT), Whiteman (HG/CT)

I think Vicario will be playing the vast majority of games but I think Austin is ready to start picking up game time in some of the dead rubber games in Europe or in League Cup games. I don't see signing another GK as necessary or even bringing value.

DR: PORRO, Kayode |
DL: UDOGIE, Hickey (HG)

My first choice would be Florentina fullback Michael Kayode. He's young and has everything needed to be a strong, defensively capable inverted fullback. The left back I would try to get Brentford Aaron Hickey. He's had a really steady season and can play both sides.
Truthfully my first choice would be Bradley Locko but I think he's had such a good season at Brest that they would be looking at 40 to 50 million.

DRC: ROMERO, Dragusin
DLC: VAN DE VEN, Davies (HG)

I think our first choice 3 are set and I suspect the 4th spot will be filled by Davies if we bring in a deputy to Udogie or it will give Phillips some minutes of he doesn't go on loan.

DMC: Locatelli, Bissouma,
MRC: BENTANCUR, Pape Sarr, Skipp (HG/CT)
MLC: MADDISON (HG) , Kulusevski, Bergval

For the midfield, I'd be looking only adding that first choice DM and the guy I would look to bring is Manuel Locatelli from Juventus. Still only 25 and very good in a DM playmaker role. My second choice would be to see if Ruben Neves would like to return to European football but I'm sure the wages would be a problem

FR: Olise (HG), Johnson (HG)

I'd really like to see us go in for Olise as I think he is a better player than Eze but I would take either of them to be fair. Or Nico Williams if he was on the market

FL: SON, Werner, |

FC: Toney, Richarlison, Parrott (HG/CT) |

I don't like Toney but if Ange agrees then there's no better option for a forward that is proven in this league and ready to hit the ground. There are a couple of young options but I'd prefer a striker that was on his prime.

Player to provide Squad back up if not loaned

Phillips, Devine, Santiago, Scarlett, Veliz, Donley, Hall, Dorrington

Need to go;

Forster, Sessegnon, Gil, Royal, Hojbjerg, Ndombele, Rodon, Spence, Reguilon, Solomon, Lo Celso

Forster signed a new contract in December. We're clearly not signing another keeper when you throw in Austin's new contract and that Alfie Whiteman, the absolute legend, still has another year left. I'd guess Whiteman or Austin go out on loan, unless both Gunter and Keeley do, in which case one will be 2nd/3rd choice with Forster and the other will fill in at under 21 as an overage.

Dunno about Doughty, but is Kyle going into his last year? Perhaps we could sell them PEH for 15, and take Kyle for less? Ha.

Eze 60, Striker 50, 10 each for the FB covers.

Income from sales? Emerson 20, PEH 15, Reguilon 10, GLC 10, Rodon 7

Some talking of 150 net- we can have Conor as well if true- which it won't be

If it were me I’d want my back up keeper to have a bit more experience then Austin has at the moment. After giving him a five year deal I would guess he’s seen as a long term back up keeper so I’d send him out on loan next season. Keep Forster as number 2 and Whiteman as number 3.

I’d definitely send Keeley back out on loan after doing well at Barnet this season. Preferably league one if the club can organise that. I’d also try and find a loan for Gunter as well.

GK - Vicario / Forster / Austin

RB - Porro / NEW
CB - Romero / Dragusin
CB - VDV / Dorrington
LB - Udogie / DOUGHTY

CM - Bentancur / Bissouma / Hall
CM - Sarr / Bergvall
CM - Maddison / Kulusevski / Donley

LW - Sonny / Werner / Soloman / Moore
RW - Johnson / NEW
ST - NEW / Veliz /

Sell or Released - Emerson / Spence / Sessegnon / Reguilon / Tanganga / Davies / Rodon / Skipp / GLC / PEH / Ndombele / Gil / Richarlison

Loaned - Phillips / Devine / Scarlett.

So a new RB, LB, RW and ST. Could also sign a new centre midfielder also.
Basically a lot of work to do.

Good point - I hadn’t realised this but seems you’re correct.

I think it would do us more favours in the long run to start giving meaningful minutes to Donley and any of the other U21's that are close to breaking through, as opposed to bringing back players like Edwards or KWP who might not be what we need.

They might not be at the level we want yet but start the process now and in a couple of years we won't be having this head ache.

I agree with the principle here and think Donley will get some game time for us this season. However there are two issues - the first is that Edwards and KWP would both be expected to play most weeks and if Porro or Johnson get injured will be expected to play most games. I don’t think Donley or any of the others are quite ready for that yet. The second issue is that I don’t think we have anyone in the U21 setup that’s ready and plays at RW or RB/LB.

Sell those who have been on loan: Rodon, Japhet, Ndombele, and Reggie. I'd have another look at Spence as I saw him have a couple of decent games at Genoa.
Sell those who don't fit the system: Royal, PEH, Gil, Lo Celso, and Davies.
*Replace those five with Gray, Gallagher, Doughty, Eze and Olise.
Sell Skipp.
*Buy Toney.
Promote CB, Donley, Moore, and a striker from the youth.
Hire open top bus for next May.

*My purchases are based solely on players I have seen a lot of in the Prem as I don't watch enough of other leagues. ☹️

5 yr contract for Austin. Has the world gone mad. We don’t even know if he’s any good.
