World Cup discoveries

With the World Cup a matter of weeks away now, and relative inactivity in clubs signing players before the tournament..got me wondering about which little known players are gonna make a name for themselves in this summers competition. The obvious young European stars are there for all to see, but any players flying low under the radar? Any brave predictions as to names to look out for perhaps players spurs should be in for prior to the start of the 2014 World Cup

Not a discovery but I think Eduardo Vargas might do well for Chile... although doesn't get a look in for Napoli, they're always loaning him out.

Russia are a veteran team under Capello (as you'd expect), but he puts in a lot of faith in Alexander Kokorin as an ACM/Second Striker

Yep. Najar's a good one, IMO. Watched a few of his matches when he was in MLS. Im looking forward to seeing him in Brazil.

Another one to look out for is the young German-American, Julian Green. Hasnt really played any real minutes for Bayerns first team but tore it up for their reserve side and has received a lot of plaudits from everyone at Bayern. Kid has gobs and gobs of potential and is receiving alot of praise from teammates and coaches during training. Had he not separated his shoulder against Mexico, he would have made a few starts/appearances for the first team in Bundesliga play. No one has seen this kid really play unless they watch german 4th division football so he will be a very intriguing player to watch in Brazil.

Also really looking forward to seeing Clasie and Depay from Netherlands, our former youth player, Massimo Luongo, for Australia and Isaac Brizuela for Mexico.

One player to keep an eye on might be Tom Rogic of Australia. Australia are obviously going to struggle a lot, but I have been watching Rogic play for a few seasons now and he is a very talented player.

My tips, some are pretty well known though, others are too old and some are most likely not good enough to play for Spurs. But all are worth keeping an eye out for. Also I've avoided mentioning the obvious players.

Cuadrado, Ospina (Colombia), Peralta (Mexico), Valdiva (Chile), Ryan (Australia), Yamaguchi (Japan), Immobile, Destro, Di Sciglio (Italy), Drimic (Switzerland), Ibarra (Ecuador), Aron Johannsson (USA), Feghouli (Algeria).

Are some name to look out for. I must say I haven't watched all of these players play but have heard good things about them and look forward to see them play.

I'm unsure about Rogic. He failed to exactly nail down a place in Celtic.. I mean he is talented for sure but considering good league 1 players are able to make it at Celtic I wonder exactly how good he really is.

What I do no is that Australia will do well if they manage to exit the tournament without being completely thrashed. I mean they are in a tough group and frankly are a very weak team this year (certainly within the worst 5 or so teams in what is a very strong world cup this year, i.e. none of those Slovenia's etc from the European side etc) and their new manager seems to have this lets have a go mentality which really could open them up to some heavy defeats.

Cant speak on anyone there except for Johansson, who i've tried to keep an eye on since he signed for Alkmaar. He's a good attacking player whose future is as second striker or attacking midfielder/winger. Doesnt like to play as a lone striker although he can do a job there. He scores lots of goals and creates opportunites for teammates also. I think he can be good one, but am not too sure yet on his full potential.

To expand on this on some of the players,

I've heard interesting things about Johannsson who as done very well at AZ and is a big hope though not proven internationally.

Cuadrado excites me a lot. He is a rapid player who ended the season in Balesque form (6 goals and 2 assists in 7 games). He can also play pretty much in every position bar CB and Goalkeeper. But mostly plays as a rightback or a left winger. The latter being the position in which he has had most success.

Ospina and Ryan are both two young promising goalkeepers. Who are due moves to bigger clubs.

Peralta is Mexico's big hope I feel. He has been nicknamed the mexican Ronaldo and has been in good form. A late bloomer at 30.

Yamaguchi is interesting as he has got some good reviews playing for Japan the few times he has played. Though it is always difficult to measure players playing for the local league and he may not even start. But I'm very interested to see his development as I know very little about him bar his good reviews. Can play both as a holding midfielder and a defensive one.

There shouldn't be any discoveries for clubs and whole WC is just distraction to clubs, for us there may be some up and coming names to watch, but personally not that excited about whole tournament. Haven't been for ages, it was all different back in the day for various reasons.

I am unsure what was going on with Rogic at Celtic. Obviously he was just not impressing Lennon enough to get regular starts, maybe he has mentality issues. I certainly think he is the most gifted prospect to come out of the A-League so far, and if players like Kruse and Oar (both imo far less talented players than Rogic) can mould a career for themselves in Europe it would be a shame if Rogic misses out. As I said, no guarantees of success...just one to keep an eye on.

The good thing about this tournament from an Australian perspective is that with an almost completely new generation of players in, a lot of whom have never seen more than 5-10 caps for Australia, there is absolutely no expectation on their shoulders. It is an ideal way to get these young players some big tournament experience for the coming years when there will be a certain expectation.
