Jenas was bang on... it is clear as day that we appear to be bypassing the midfield. Against Bayern and against Wolves we basically skipped the midfield and went long to the front four. When it sticks its fine and we look dangerous but it isnt sustainable.

I suspect and hope that when Ndombele comes back he will be that man but cant imagine Jose playing him in a two... so i dont know.

Exactly, I wouldn't be surprised to see winks start next game. Unlike the other two, he'd have looked up to see if there was a forward pass option on, not just played it back to the defence with every ball without seeing if they're were other better options.

Imagine Dier will still play as for some bizarre reason Mourinho seems to love him. Therefore expect to see Sissoko either on the bench or or instead of Moura upfront.

I doubt Jose wants us to abandon the midfield in every match. However, if due to injuries our best CM2 is Dier and Sissoko, trying to pass out from the back would be suicide, hence we went long so often.

If Ndombele or Winks were starting we'd surely play a lot more short passes and retain the ball better, though obviously with a far more direct approach than we saw under Poch.

Thank you sir.

Jenas is spot on. I think Mourinho knows what the weakness is of the team right now, but it's what he has to work with at the moment, so better get the best out of it, before he can get anyone in.

It was more sissoko's name that made me post that...

Smash and grab result. Makes a change being on the right end of this sort of result though.

This was just the kind of fixture that I'd be moaning about our inability to get a result through pure will if nothing else if he hadn't won. So on one hand; three points, job done and we actually defended the centre of the box excellently.

On the other hand, we're playing hoofball these days. The last time we had longer spells of meaningful possession was vs. Bournemouth before Ndombele went off. Other than that, it's hoping Kane wins a flick on or that we manage to play Son or Alli in behind. We wont become #good playing this way, but Mourinho knows this just as well as I do, and we'll just have to trust the process for now. Lo Celso and Ndombele was bought to fix our midfield, and I suspect they'll do just that. In time.

Eh, what is wrong with ‘hoof ball’? It’s a quick transition FFS. It’s how you counterattack.

You do not counter attack by having the CBs passing between eachother before one of them lumps the ball up to Kane surrounded by two CBs. I'm talking more about how we progress the ball when there's no counter attack on.

Yeah, concise analysis from JJ there. Highlights Winks' importance as a pivot, but also having the defensive player to shield the back four.

Surprised at Sissoko though, he's normally not one who's shy to carry the ball and barge his way forward when he can. Its almost like they may have been instructed to play it safe.

Better teams? Wolves hadn’t lost a league match in over 2 months. Maybe they’re not Liverpool but how much better could their form have been going into this one?
Indeed, especially taking into account that yesterday was their 31st game of the season.

I think they've been told to keep it simple, even to a point where they don't try to turn with the ball but just play it in the direction they're facing. I suppose it worked to some extent and we mugged them for a result but the sooner we get somebody in there who can find a pass or take an opponent on, the better. Don't like the pivot with the players at our disposal.

I like Winks as a player but I would also be curious to see how our win/loss percentage changes when he's out of the team. Obviously losses aren't down to a single player, but it feels like we concede more when he's in the side.

I would love to agree with you but did you see the Man U match? Winks started but still the defence seem to want to hoof it at every opportunity and then SC decided it was still Winks's fault. IMO it can only be tactical the amount of hoof ball we're seeing. I know many of you don't particularly give a shit about the style of play, as long as we're winning, but personally this kind of football makes my eyes bleed.

TBF we weren't that direct in the games against the spammers, Bournemouth and Burnley, if it's restricted to tough away games and we're getting results I can live with it, but if it turns into the norm then we'll have problems with the fan base.

He's won four out of five league games so far, so it's effective for now that's for sure.

Only been here a few weeks so can't change too much this quickly.

What's he doing in the interim?

Getting results, oh and scoring lots of goals.

But I agree it's just fucking terrible ?

There is little in common between the "hoof ball" that sides like Bolton and Stoke used to play, with the ball being belted in a general upfield direction for a quick player to chase or a big striker to hold up, and the kind of directed aerial passes that Gazzaniga and Alderweireld aim at Dele, Kane, Son or Lucas.

What we play now is no more "hoof ball" than it was when Robinson would nail a line-drive clearance into Berbatov's chest, from where it would fall gracefully onto his toe.

I'm pleased to see it, because it's skilful football in its own way and it's part of a varied attack - as long as it doesn't become the default mode and account for more than (say) 30% of our transitions.
