I was thinking more along the lines of pressing and running one's arse off/tracking back for the team

Surely his higher success rate winning tackles, his blocks and his clearances show he can press and come back into defensive areas. I know Jose prefers a team of workers and is overly reliant on defensive qualities running throughout his team but the stats point to Martial having a larger defensive impact than Zaha does in the role he has at Palace it seems

The most important thing I look for in x player, is he a match winner? To answer my own question (yes) Martial is a match winner. He has clearly scored the winning goals in more games than Zaha during their premier careers (although I wouldn't mind Zaha, especially playing with the qualities we have in our team/squad) and for that reason Martial would be my first choice.

Zaha did play quite a few games at centre forward last season which might skew the figures somewhat.

Good sign on the Martial stats however, was a bit concerned about his work rate. His general demeanour doesn't give off a hardworking vibe.

Interesting reading on the Premier League stats website regarding defensive contribution relating to Zaha & Martial:

Fouls committed:
Zaha - 191
Martial - 83

Tackles:
Zaha - 212
Martial - 53

Blocked shots:
Zaha - 60
Martial - 41

Interceptions:
Zaha - 95
Martial - 21

Clearances:
Zaha - 21
Martial - 33

It seems like Zaha has more to offer defensively when chasing the ball down, intercepting and making tackles etc, but as people have said, this info can be skewed as Zaha would be chasing the ball down a lot more playing for Crystal Palace than Martial would have to playing for Man U

They don't take in to account time played remember. Zaha played 1000 more minutes last season.

Then again, Mourinho's teams are pretty defensive and boring and shite

Very good point that I hadn't thought of, yet Martial has assisted as many and scored more. It's starting to look like a non-contest. Martial has, statistically a better pedigree than Zaha it seems, and is still only 22.

Someone raised the point earlier about Zaha being more of a winger and Martial being more of a wide forward. I'm pretty sure that's a really good analysis of them both and how they differ

Work Colleague is a Palace fan and told me of a forum he uses. Found some interesting info here:-

I met Mark Bright on Sunday on a charity football walk and he said a few interesting things. I originally asked him what the odds are on Wilf leaving...

He said that if a big offer comes in from a Champions' League club, they'll have a very difficult decision to make. If Wilf shows a big interest, they are worried about him being unhappy being made to stay.

He said they can see something different about Wilf when he came to training after the Summer. He seems to either have been thinking about the WC/CL or had his head turned.

He said Wilf's agent works with the club a lot and represents a few of the players. He doesn't think the agent is pushing the move on Wilf.

He said Parish has been quiet this Summer as he's a fan and cares about the fans. He doesn't like to either lie or appear to have lied to the fans as he wants their trust. I read this to mean when he doesn't deny something, there's a big chance it could happen.

My opinion having had this 10 min conversation is that if he's going, we'll sell him early enough to spend the money on replacements. No-one had made a bid as of Sunday. The longer time goes on, the less likely it is happening this window...

In addition to that they seem to be losing their shit on his instagram posts today, seems he's not at training and talking about making a change. Wonder if it's us, Herc suggested if it were to happen it'd have to be a week early.

Ally Gold said this is not happening and neither is martial!

He is very reliable. Sounds like we are only targeting home grown players ( Lascelles to replace Toby if he goes). My worry is I can’t think of any other home grown options that are realistic and beneficial! Ward-Prowse? Gray? Redmond?

He has connections, but I hope he's wrong for the sake of this site. Would be the mother of all meltdowns.
