Who are our most important players?

To distract me from my anger at HR's latest press conference comments, I have turned my thoughts to the summer.

There has been a lot of discussion on here about which players we should buy but who are the players, in your opinion, who we simply cannot afford to lose?

Mine are, in order:

1) Modric - simply our best player by a country mile. I think I might throw in the towel if we lose him
2) Sandro - if there was an award for best player of the 2nd half of the season, he would definitley be a contender. Already a very good player, I think he has the potential to be a great
3) Bale - loss of form recently but noone can doubt his ability - one of the best left sided players in the world

Modric, Benni and Sandro in that order. Others may not be so easy to "upgrade", but they'd be nowhere near as difficult to replace as the three above.

Come on, there is no way BAE can be classed as more valuable to our team than Sandro - the lad has barely put a foot wrong since being in the side and we'd be foolish to let a player of that calibre go.

For all BAE's good points, he still has games where he mentally goes to sleep, not to mention his slightly erratic distribution. Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike the guy, nor would I actively look to upgrade that position but he's certainly not in the same class as Sandro or Modric.

Sadly there aren't as many as you'd hope.

Sandro is on his way to becoming an important player and Modric and Bale are already there.

BAE has been very good but lets not go OTT and think he's irreplaceable, the same goes for Lennon.

Most importantly our centre backs and strikers aren't that important to us. All can be improved upon and with what we have we are weaker than we need to compete at both ends of the pitch.

The thread isn't about who is better or worse than anyone else though mate, it's about how important they are to us.

Benni is included because he is consistently good, settled, and does a damn good job of patrolling the left side without much help from those ahead of him, (other than Modric usually, but not even Luka can be in two or three places at once), and because there are very, very few LBs who are as good, let alone better, and the ones that arguably might be, are very unavailable, especially to us with our wage structure.

If you actually think about it seriously, you'll realise that he does actually merit his place in the list.

1) Luka Modric - Top top world-class top ootballer.
2) Gareth Bale - The key to our future.
3) Rafael Van Der Vaart- Top world-class player.
4) Sandro - See Bale.
5) Ledley King - Best defender in the world when fit.
6) Benoite Assou Ekotto - His consistency this season have shown how important he is to us.
7) Aaron Lennon - Top player but plenty of room for improvement.
8) William Gallas - In the absence of King he has been triffic.
9) Tom Huddlestone - Top player, incredible passing ability. And boy he can strike a ball.
10) Michael Dawson - Top defender, been a decent captain in the absence of King.
11) Younis Kaboul - Has potential to become our next King.
12) Wilson Palacios - Fiesty. :x
13) Vedran Corluka - Works with Aaron Lennon really well. Also is Luka's best friend.
14) Heurelho Gomes - Top top keeper capable of pulling of world-class saves. More importantly is Sandro's best friend.
15) Danny Rose - Can provide back up to Benny next season. Only 20 and potential to become a top top player.
16) Me.

Granted, I see where you are coming from and I agree that he's a player we should keep but all i'm saying is that he's not indispensable like Sandro or Modric and apologies if I came across all narky, it was more the fact that you placed him above Sandro in terms of importance to us so that was what I was trying to ascertain.

In any case, Rose did more than an adequate job of filling in for him yesterday and he's been a winger for most of his (brief) playing career.

That's simply because Benni has been doing it for us for much longer than Sandro. It's way too early to tell yet whether Sandro is a flash in the pan or not, I'd say it's very unlikely given the attitude the guy seems to have and his very obvious talent, but it's possible. Ask me again this time next year and if he's continued turning in the type of performances which he has to date and I'd probably put him at #1 in the list.

PS Ya didn't sound narky mate, don't worry about it.

Modric - our metronome, utterly vital to everything we are and how we play, a little magician, 10 goals per season will add another 10 mill to his already soaring valuation. Irreplaceable.

Dawson - not blessed with pace, reads the game beautifully, better CB than John Terry imo

Sandro - has the potential to be our Vieira, which is high praise.

Fair enough mate, in any case let's hope we can maintain the good foundations we have and come back even stronger next season!

Godric, a joy to behold, the player we must keep, although in my opinion the most wanted player we have!

Bale, on form unstoppable, out of form, still warrants enough attention from the opposition to free up a player.

Sandro, a new hero emerges, immense

Hudd, really missed him against the lesser sides this season.

Benni, bar Modric our other constant performer

Modric is our absolutely indespensible one.

vdV is our only other world-class player.

Sandro and Bale should be our future.

Gomes, BAE, Dawson, Gallas, Corluka, Hudd and Lennon are important players.

Modric and Sandro. The team will be built around them. It's all about the spine, which is why we need a new CB who will be with us for many years to come and couple of new strikers.
