Let's get creative in a classic Bob Carlos-era Brazil 4-2-2-2:

Lloris
Walker Chiriches Vertonghen Rose
Sandro Dembele
Paulinho Eriksen
Lamela Adebayor

Lloris

Walker Kaboul Vertonghen Townsend

Sandro
Paulinho Dembele

Lamela Soldado Eriksen

When Holtby is back I would have him in there instead of Dembele.

I have edited this team to include Townsend at LB as I think he is better going forward than Rose and can't be much worse defensively. Also he is less prone to stupidity.

I'm already looking to the Liverpool fixture, if all goes OK up to then this could well be the pivotal 'game of the season' for us. The above line-up would be pretty much the team I'd like to see; two banks of 4, playing a slightly deeper line, Lloris as the sweeper in a 4-4-1-1.

For goals, this team:

Lloris
Walker Vert Chi Rose
Lamela Paulinho Dembele Eriksen
Sodado Ade

We should be playing this at home anyway.

For balance this team:

Lloris
Walker Vert Kaboul Rose
Chadli Siggy Paulinho Dembele Eriksen
Ade

Trick question - there is no 'best 11'.

Have to be adaptable to different opposition, be it against two banks of four at home to going away to Man City and putting in a credible and hard working performance.

All fit and on top form I'd go:-

Lloris; Walker, Kaboul, Vertonghen, Rose; Lennon, Sandro, Dembele, Eriksen, Townsend; Adebayor.

Standard every-game line-up:

Lloris
Walker Kaboul Vertonghen Rose
Sandro
Paulinho Dembele
Lamela Adebayor/Soldado Eriksen

Not fussed between Ade and Robbie up front in that line-up. Think that would suit all-comers.

At home if we needed goals and didn't expect much from the opposition:

Lloris
Walker Kaboul Vertonghen Rose
Sandro
Lamela Paulinho Eriksen
Soldado Adebayor

Sandro gives the front 5 a platform to go forward and have fun - Walker and Rose overlap with Sandro covering.

Also, Sandro.

Bench: Brad, Dawson, Naughton, Townsend, Lennon, Chadli, Plus whichever one of Soldado/Adebayor/Dembele.

EDIT: I hate our injuries. Look at those fucking teams. Ridiculously good. If Those line-ups got ten games together and found so cohesion and form... What a team we are still capable of putting together.

Dembele and Paulinho are interchangeable on form although I'd actually be tempted to play Holtby alongside Eriksen if we're getting enough movement from the front 3. Sigurdsson would also be in with a shout against weaker sides as the more forward thinking of the cm3. I know people on here are keen to hate him but he offers greater goal threat from the middle than any other player in the side and that could be useful against sides the park the bus.

You are either an idiot or a genius, my head tells me the former but my heart hopes the latter.

The day of the full back being obsolete is not far from us my son. It just needs one brave maverick to try it either with my formation, or instead of two strikers and a free role playmaker behind.... one striker and two invested wingers. That's right... my formation has inverted and traditional wingers! Those traditional wingers would have to work hard of course and track back, but they'd still primarily provide width going forward, and hence more space for the inverted wingers/ free roll playmaker to roam and pull defenders in all directions for the 1/2 forwards. Then, a ball player in the middle to link play and turn defence into attack, Modric style, and a high energy box to box player to always be available as an outlet wherever the ball is on the pitch ala Gerrard, guarded by a defensive midfielder with all the energy, athleticism, strength, pace and height to play two roles in one effectively by double up as a centre back when the opposition have the ball on the flanks (see Vieira for Arsenal or Toure for Barca), but just plain smash it when the opposition attack through the middle, and two centre backs who are clever and comfortable enough to peel into the full back slow when the opposition attack down their side (Pique and Puyol when they were good/ young).

Out of possession, a well drilled unit with defined roles who can deal with all forms of onslaught. In possession (and with a 6 man midfield, there should be a lot of this), a free flowing attack which can literally burst forward from any angle and exploit all areas of the pitch.

Hence, full backs not needed.

I disagree about fullbacks, I think they are utterly vital in modern football. Valencia gifting us a goal against Utd shows why they are so important. As midfielders will always have a different mind set, and it is the tight margins that make the difference.

Yes pretty much my team and formation but Adebayor would have to start atm because of the goalscoring form he is on
